CBark and Marty Schuab battle it out in TS What happens a bunch of stoke fueled North Carolina based hillbillies want to race the weekend of the World Championships in Brixlegg, Austria but either don’t have the money or time to go? Simple, they host their own 3 day race and invite everyone to come join them with promises of racing down the notorious Hobby Hill and going head to head with the National TS Champ. Chris Barker.
Friday Night: Boarder Cross
The epic weekend was to begin Friday night as everyone met up at the homestead of Evan St. Clair in preparation for the boarder cross he had planned out. The original plan was for there to be two classes for the boarder cross, one for longboards over 36” and no pumping was allowed, the other would be 36” and under with pumping allowed to allow CBark to show off his skills, the original plan did not last long though. As everyone followed Evan to the site of the race and rode the course he had set out:
“It starts off with a little roller goes for about 3 or 400 feet, and then it flattens out about 400 more feet. Then drops about 200 feet down the steep part of the hill into a right hander anther 200feet then 180 left hander anther 200feet right hander that’s it. It’s very fun and it’s really not that fast. It’s something every one can ride. I would say top speed is 25 mph and the cones are around 40 feet apart”.
As everyone tested out the course it became clear there weren’t enough people for two separate classes and that the course was somewhat dry without pumping, so the original rules were booted and it was a 2 man heats with unlimited pumping. The races were all out pump fest with the first race being Evan and CBark battling for gates while pumping even knocking boards a few times. CBark got knocked out early due to his inability to adapt to the chaotic hillbilly carnage he was partaking in. It wasn’t long before first blood was claimed by Carl Crider(Mister Surly) as he went down saying the following “I knew this was a bad Idea!!!!! ::ground sky ground sky face plant::!!! I knew this was a bad Idea!!!!!” His pain was not in vain since he scored a sweet subsonic deck for it in the end.
RIP Mister Surly As it got darker it became clear that the lights weren’t coming on at the thought time, so rather than stop the race riders raced down the course with there way lighted by the headlights of Marion Karr’s truck as it tailed them down the course. In the end it was Evan St. Clair who picked up a win as he pumped his Evo (that was not a typo, the man pumped an Landy Evo like it was a slalom board).
1st> Evan St. Clair 2nd> Marion Karr 3rd> Darren Holt Saturday: Hybrid and GS
After the Mayhem that ensued Friday night everyone was stoked to see what Saturday held and the course that Cbark and Marion had set up.
Saturday began with a CBark signature slalom course that demanded a ton of pumping especially at the end. The A bracket was won by Cbark with Evan St. Clair bearing down on him closer and closer with each race.
CBark using his Kung Fu style
Evan St Clair only got faster as the day progressed Coming in 3rd was Georgia’s very own Ron Olson who beat out his training partner Marty Schuab for his top three finish.
Schuab left, Olson right The B bracket was headed by Marion the black power ranger Karr Second Place went to Wesley Tucker aka Parallel Man
The real Cinderella story of the day was Jim Mathers who recently started slalom again after a ankle surgery came out of nowhere snagging 3rd place and getting everyone stoked on his great comeback. With the hybrid done everyone’s eyes turned to the looming Hobby Hill and the GS race that was about to take place. The course started further up, than the Dixie Cup course meaning only one thing, MORE SPEED. So after wheel bases were lengthened and six wheelers unveiled the descent began. Proving that he was not a one trick pony Cbark shot down Hobby Hill snagging 1st.
Marty Schuab pulled out his signature six wheeler with pink gumballs in the front and zigzags in the back, and gave off pure stoke as he flew down Hobby Hill to finish behind CBark.
Not letting CBark out of his sights Evan St. Clair finished 3rd
Major props go to Ron Olson who not too long ago took a spill on Hobby Hill that literally broke his helmet, but none the less was charging it like it never happened. Sunday: TS
Sunday provided a questionable start due to brief showers that kept the course damp, but in the end a bunch of hillbillies weren’t going to let it hold them back. Even as rain fell in spurts racers were pumping down the course getting practice runs in. Magically as if a blessing by the god of stoke, the rain finally subsided and the course was dried and it was time to begin TS. CBark was on fire giving the DHB a lesson on how TS is supposed to be done racking a 1st place finish.
While CBark came in first Evan St. Clair was hot on his tail in 2nd, the whole day getting closer with each run
Evan St. Clair being set up for a sneak attack by his brother Shannon St. Clair Just when the weekend couldn’t hold anymore shockers Ron Olson once again stepped up and brought his game
The B bracket was more entertaining than the A, nothing was sacred and no one was safe. Darren Holt(Dholt), who qualified for the A bracket in hybrid the previous day, was on fire as he beat out Marion Karr to take a first place finding and showed himself to be someone to look out for.
In the epic finals for the B bracket in TS Marion Karr couldn’t keep up as DHolt pulled away forcing him to settle for 2nd
Where there is one St. Clair killing it, you know the other isn’t too far behind Shannon St. Clair claims 3rd
Carolina Call Out:
With the combination of the long weekend and the hot and humid day most of the racers were too burnt out, Evan St. Clair on the other hand had been tweaking his board and was itching for another shot at CBark. Both racers shot down the ramps with Evan hot on CBarks heels applying the pressure causing CBark to miss the last cone a DQ. IT WAS ON. Evan hyped of his win accepeted CBarks call out for a rematch, this time CBark came up with the win. Three more call outs between the two were raced with CBark winning each time, but Evan was also getting closer each time proving himself someone to watch out for.
A HUGE thanks goes out to John Karg from Woody’s Halfpipe(Official Skate Shop of the DHB), who sponsored the event all provided all of the prizes. http://woodyshalfpipe.com/ The full collection of pictures from the Jug Jam can be seen at: http://s92.photobucket.com/albums/l19/DHB_stoke/Jug%20Jam/ Be sure to visit us at http://www.downhillbillies.org/ |
