British man Dave Cornthwaite, 26, took up longboarding in March 2005. Fourteen months later he became the first person to skate the 900 mile/ 1450km route from John O'Groats to Land's End. Now, just two months after completing this record-breaking length of Britain journey, Cornthwaite is preparing for an epic skate across Australia, from Perth to Brisbane.

The proposed 4000 mile/ 6435 km route will see Cornthwaite leave Perth in late August and then skate across the barren Nullarbor Plain before he joins the coastline at Adelaide. From there, he will follow the coast through Melbourne and Sydney before reaching his final destination, Brisbane, in late December. If successful, the journey will break the current world distance skateboarding record by 1000miles/ 1600km.

This Australian journey is the second leg of an initiative called BoardFree, which Cornthwaite founded in June 2005. BoardFree aims to raise funds and awareness for three children's charities; Sailability Australia, Link Community Development and the Lowe Syndrome Trust, as well as promoting sport to young people of all ages and abilities by encouraging a 'no-limits' approach to life.

Cornthwaite hopes to include thousands of Australians in his record-attempt, and has extended an open invitation to anyone in Australia who skates or cycles to join him on the road for a small part of the journey, in return for raising sponsorship to go towards the three supported charities.

In case people think skateboarding 4000mile/6534 km isn't enough, Cornthwaite is encouraging the public to suggest dares for him to complete en route as part of a scheme called 'Dare Dave', whereby supporters can propose a dare in return for an equivalent donation. Supporters can also get personally involved in the Australian journey by sponsoring a specific 'section' in return for detailed updates and exclusive pictures of Cornthwaite skating their sections.
