| | The town of Antrim, New Hampshire has sponsored and programmed slalom skateboard racing into their harvest festival this year. They've closed a freshly paved road for the race course, and organized a pie contest. They've invited skaters to visit Antrim to race and setup a Pet Show. They've got a parade, a soap-box derby racer and a slalom clinic for the town's kids...to be taught by Joe Iocavelli and Wenztle Ruml IV! The town's leadership have incorporated slalom skateboard racing into the fabric of their annual harvest event, and if you're in New England next week, you should drive on over to Antrim and check the Home & Harvest Festival and The Race for the Old Gold Jug, September 15th and 16th, 2006. It all starts on Friday, with a slalom skateboard clinic for the youth of Antrim and the Monadnock Regionto be taught by stokin' Joe and Wentzle Ruml from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The clinic will focus on the proper techniques for skateboard slalom, safety equipment required, and includes a tutorial on skateboard decks, trucks & wheels used in the sport. Parents are encouraged to attend and required to sign a waiver for their child to participate. Students who demonstrate ability at the sport during the clinic may participate in a timed novice race, 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 16, following the "Race for the Old Gold Jug" professional competition. Winner of the novice race receives a $945 tuition for a week of skateboard camp at one of the premier sports camps in the U.S., Camp Woodward, in Woodward, PA. Now, that's what we're talkin' about!! |
Right after the slalom clinic? Oh, they've got a public Ham & Bean dinner. Bring the kids, bring your parents and chat about what's coming the next day: qualifying races for the pro/am race start at 10:00am. There's a break in the action, though, because the town leaders have invited the racers to ride their boards in the town's parade down Main Street! After the parade, it gets down to it: The Race for the Old Gold Jug will commence after Noon. It's a Hybrid race and check out this hill: After the Mains, it's time for the Novice racing on the same hill, and then a BBQ at Tenney Farm, including live music. (Dinner included in Race Registration, music & fireworks free.) Oh, did we mention fireworks? Sure thing, the whole town convenes at 7:30 pm for fireworks and formal presentation of the Old Gold Jug trophy to the race winner! That's about all we've got...and we had to search this out after we heard a rumor... Go to http://www.antrimcc.com/skateboard/ for more information, the registration forms and news about the housing...yep, they've got places for you to stay, ranging from Bed & Breakfasts to the gymnasium floor. Nobody gets left out. |
