Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund Skate for the Troops

Derek Smith and Honey Skateboards , located in Simi Valley, Ca, are setting up a charity ride for the Semper Fi Fund. The skateboard ride, “Skate for the Troops” will be from Oceanside, Ca to Del Mar, Ca, about 30 miles. The ride is going to start November 14th in the morning at 8am at the Oceanside Pier on by the boardwalk and participants will ride south to Del Mar to raise funds and awareness for the Semper Fi Fund .

The Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund is a foundation which helps injured and critically ill Marines, Sailors, and their families. The Semper Fi Fund provides financial assistance and quality of life solutions or those injured in post 9-11 combat and training. The Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund has been helping wounded soldiers and their families since May 2004. The Fund is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that has provided over 15,000 grants totaling over $33 million in assistance to our Nation's wounded and critically ill heroes and their families. They provide immediate relief for all financial needs that arise due to injuries received. Service Member and Family Support, Housing Assistance, Medical Support , and PTSD/Combat Stress Specialized Equipment are only a few of the services they provide for our countries heroes. The Semper Fi Fund is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the people who keep our country safe. The “Skate for our Troops” event is only one of many events the foundation support and hold. The foundation has a group of military Veterans who qualify for the foundation’s assistance. This group, Team Semper Fi, participates in various athletic events such as marathons. The Team Semper Fi Sports Program was established in 2006 by the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund as another way to assist those who are injured in combat and training. The function of the program is to assist in the recovery and rehabilitation of Veteran Athletes, and provide inspiration to all of the Veterans the Fund serves. “Skate for the Troops” is collecting donations for the Semper Fi Fund and 100% of all funds collected for the ride will be given to the foundation. There will also be a raffle at the end. Derek Smith, 26 years old, the lead coordinator for the event, was a Marine himself, and served two tours in Iraq. He currently skateboards for Honey Skateboards and wanted to give back to the Marines for serving their country so bravely. However this event is not only to help the great men and women of the armed forces it is also to help improve the way people see skateboarding, and help dismantle the negative stereotypes about skateboarding. The Northridge Longboarders, a Cal State Northridge club is participating in the ride and plans to raise additional funds for the event.
