La Costa Reunion 2009 Dinner

the signal hill gang at la cost

Nearly 40 years ago, the new predecessor from the 60's of skateboarding was transforming into what we know it today. As a skateboard shop rat turned skateboard surfshop salesman at PB Surf Shop, one of my daily chores of counting loose bearings as they slid into hard composite wheels with cone-nuts was about to take on a technological shock as urethane wheels by Frank Nasworthy's compounds began to flood our shop. Not too long after, early forms of both precision bearings and aluminum cast trucks were revolutionizing the skateboard before our very eyes as a bona fide "safer" complete product over its predecessor.

Larry Gordon, owner of PB Surf Shop with Bill Andrews became one of the leading skateboard shops in San Diego with the most rad product line including Bahne, Sims and the infamous G&S line,  all as of recent taken the back seat to the current brands like Tony Hawk's Lines, Gravity, EarthWing and Sector 9. The fact remains that the early companies poured their heart and soul into the product lines and today we have 1000 plus more companies and product lines that have resurrected from the pasts failures. With good old yankee know-how,  the new land surfer breeds demanding street tough products for specialty riding from street and ramp to downhill racing and long-boarding can bathe in the product lines with nearly an infinite amount of choices.

As in skiing the evolution of skateboarding products benefited from the guys racing downhill and back in the day, the mid 1970's era at La Costa was a prime place where product was being tested daily at the downhill  rigorous riding courses of getting down the hill first between hard pressed gaited turns. Wheel durometers, widths, diameters and truck turning angles and strengths with the best lube and precision bearing along with snappy flexing decks consistently were getting tested thoroughly by riders who became hero's of those days. The money in the sport was next to nothing but the love and drive to be the best on the best brought out the best of the west and on December 5th in Carlsbad, those tough guys are going to have a reunion and the public is welcome to join in. Henry Hester, Bob Skolberg, Tommy Ryan, Tiger Williams, John Hughes, Chuy Madrigal are just a fwe of the names in the mix.

Join us in Carlsbad, December 5th for a Reunion Dinner where we celebrate the pioneers who helped shaped the sport of longboarding, racing and vert as we know it today.  Make reservations now as they close Novembver 29th. Dinner cost is 20.00 and a demo event will be scheduled during the day.  Make your reservations at www.lacostaboysracing.com/party .
