Action Sports Retailer Convention

The Final Day

Active Image

Before I passed out I had a solid plan, get up early hit the floors before they filled up and shoot a few things I had missed. As I was crashing at 4am I made sure to set my alarm. Hell of allot of good that did me. I woke at 10:30 to a silent house, my alarm either never went off or I managed to somehow get up, turn off my alarm, and then get back in bed all without bothering to make mental note I was doing it. In no mood to hurry I just assembled my gear and wandered to the Jeep.

The basic plan was to walk the whole floor, shooting anything I had missed and touching base with a few key people. You will find that this final installment of the coverage is a bit fragmented and hardly rational. I can explain this simply by saying; I was burned out like you have no idea. Everything was a blur of boards and broads. A thumping mix of screenprinted fabric and the shining of curved rails. I did the best I could, I showed up.

Morning didn't make any sense as I walked out my door. This is what I saw, a truck cab adorned with row after row of glassed brushes. Running my fingers along the rivlets of firm amber resin I was amazed by the absurdity. It wasn't art, it didn't have the carefull look of planning. They were just there, as if 100 workers just dropped their brushes and wandered off.

This mural was recently finished outside the Seedless workshop, my only experience with seedless is someone in a seedless van blasting down DMA while I was sliding it and the goon at the wheel screamed "YOU SUCK". Less than impressed I have loathed any semblance of their prevalent logo. This is about the first semi decent thing I can display of theirs even if the chick on the wall looks like she is a pumpkin hued zombie.

I walked up the back stairs and what do I see, two of my favorite floor models for Slingz. The girl on the board is learning to take her very first ride. She committed very well and once she got her footing she was cruising all by herself. Even if the poor girl is mongo I think we can all agree another skating girl in the world is a good thing.

The guys from Stoked Skateboards. Stoked to meet you guys!

I tried to figure this out, but I feel like I am missing an essential part of the display sarcasm.

Sadly it's pretty telling for an ASR display; potted processed crap.

Joe Motion Fins. Highly durable, UV protected, molded polycarbonate. Idonno how well they work but they are pretty as hell.

Surfers in Mexico? These figures predate the Omec and were discovered in 1955 in the La Venta archeological site. The company display this was located in was Squalo, a privately owned chain of Mexican surf shops. They were at ASR not to sell their wares but in the hopes of expanding to a few more stores.

A carbon fiber layup on a Carve Board, possibly in production in the future this board may cost upwards of 500$. If you ask me it is a great application for it. Save some weight and keep all the rigidity that powers the momentum of the carveboard into the pneumatic wheels.

The Epic Stealth Action Sports Video Camera, showing off something it does quite well. Sit in a bowl full of water and rocks. This is its natural environment so it only makes sense they would display it as thus. Please feed twice a day.

I drank the white Vital Action Water in this tub. It tasted like chilled urine. In defense of the product it is a healthy alternative to other energy drinks, however it is a poor execution. They use herbals to give it a kick and sadly skimping on the sweet left it tasting very much like watered down ginseng. As someone who used to drink straight ginseng extract, I can honestly say that it tasted better condensed into one shot than it does watered down in a whole bottle of fillers. Final verdict, my mouth tasted like I had been chewing lemon seeds for an hour.

Some assembly work being done on a Soul Arc deck, this gives you a good look at the CF leaf spring and the deck mounting system. I am interested to see where this company goes. They have a unique product and a driven sales team.

This kid is either color blind or confident as all get out. He skates more like the latter.

Denis "Shufly" Shufeldt, the one and only. He is the guy that picture center is ski stance front tucking that lil' board. It's actually official they don't make balls like that anymore. On a more serious note the Bahne line is being revived and it looks nothing less than awesome.

This is Kristal Powers.

With a name like that she has to be a super hero.

Create A Skate. I would expect laying up lams, pressing, routing, finishing, painting, sealing, gripping and building out.

No, they just marker a pre made design on it with sharpie.

I know that they only have so much time to work with but in my opinion?

Weak. Should be called "Draw On A Blank"

Alliance, they have made price point decks for a long time and now are getting into shoes.

Anyone else surprised the Anarchy Symbol wasn't copyrighted?

Either way I am a sucker for black shoes and the anarchy symbol, revolution packaged and delivered. Punk rock ramen noodles for the masses.

Dear Lost, Thank you for keeping me alive. Lost - Cadillac was my favorite, next time bring more you ran out far too quickly.

You should use focus groups, or double blind testing, or just send me a few cases.

A good look at the soft and cuddly belly of a Hamboard.

No caption can capture the awesome.

No caption can catch the, holy crap so trashy. I was kinda surprised that it was at the tail end of the convention that I finally saw a trashy drunk chick so wasted that her friends were hauling her weak ass around on a cargo dolly.  I've usually seen this thing by day two, maybe I am loosing my edge, getting desensitized. I still find it funny the whole dressing like redneck trash fad, it's even funnier when life imitates stupid.

NO LINK FOR YOU!

This concludes the ASR coverage.

The following shots are from the Sk8 Kings Freestyle Demo at the Star Of India which took place shortly after ASR concluded. I personally had never seen this many freestyle skaters rocking it at one place it was intense and well worth checking out. Hope you enjoy the shots as much as I enjoyed getting the heck out of ASR and seeing some skaters getting stoked!

It's been a long haul. Thanks for sharing the trail. I have to be honest beyond all the glint and gaudy nature of the thing I really had a good time. This ASR unlike the past few, lots of deals were made out contacts say. Friends met and like minds found. I't not about the swag, the chicks or the pics for us. We got all that. It's about supporting the companies that treat others well. Protect their customers and innovate the industry.

We're just a media company, what can we do? We can show you, you just need to watch.
