The Guajataca Downhill 2010

Active Image

The Guajataca Downhill (GDH) 2010 promises to be bigger and better than ever, thanks to The Ministry of Sports and Recreation and its secretary Dr. Henry Newmann who has become a solid supporter of the sport of Downhill on the Island of Puerto Rico. Dr. Newmann pledged $1,500 for the GDH this year, increasing the purse money for the vent to $2,000, coupled to the funds and precuts provided by the sponsors and other sources, the GDH will have the largest prize total to date. This fact has attracted legends and luminaries of this sport, such as Scoot Smith from Landyachtz and Jeff Budro from Sector 9, just to name a few of the International crowd that will be attending this year.

The Guajataca Downhill races are now on their 28th consecutive year, on what started out in the late 1970’s as a way for surfer/skaters to get down to their favorite surfing break, and has evolved into an International phenomenon.  The winding tropical mountain State Road 113  that begins up on the coastal town of Quebradillas, and ends some 2.8 kilometers away at scenic Guajataca Beach, provides an ideal scenario for people wanting to get away from the rigors of the cold weather on the Mainland US who flock to this beautiful Island paradise to enjoy this event and the amenities that exist in the NW area of Puerto Rico, Mecca to the surfing world.

The Guajataca Downhill event will last 2 days this year: Saturday 23 January and Sunday 24 January 2010.  Contestants can register on-line at piratesurfclub@gmail.com, or by calling (787)955-5069. Racers can also register on Saturday 23 January at the Quebradillas Town Baseball park where check-in and registrations will be held.  A campground will be available for all out-of-town competitors beginning on Friday night 22 Jan 2010. A free B-B-Q will be sponsored by Sector 9 at the campground on Saturday, plus there will be a slide competition, practice runs, and a reception at Parador Vistamar on the same day. Saturday night will have a live concert with some of the Island’s best bands at the Town’s square, sponsored by Coors Light Beer. Sunday will have races all day beginning at 9:00 AM, with an After Party at the end at El Caldo Bar and Grill.

Numerous Island and International sponsors are sponsoring the 2010 GDH, to include Landyachtz, Sector 9, Abec 11, Monster Energy Drink, Birdstown Surf and Skate, The Room Surf and Skate, and many others in the downhill skateboarding industry.
