Michael Brooke is on the road, and sent in this coverage of an amazing Vancouver B.C. event. Once a year, a couple of hundred longboarders ride around Vancouver's Stanley Park seawall... by Michael Brooke… My son and I flew to Calgary last week and, since then, we’ve driven thru some of the most spectacular scenery on the planet: Banff, Lake Louise and Golden. The trip has been tremendous. However, what we witnessed today was so over the top that, 5 hours later, my head is still spinning! 200-plus longboarders showed up for the Seawall Cruise in Vancouver. It was EPIC!
The stage was set to meet up at 4:20 and, 1/2 an hour later, we were ready to go. The amount of riders was staggering. The scene in Vancouver is just amazing! This was the 6th annual cruise and thankfully the weather gods cooperated this year. At around 5pm, everyone grabbed their board and charged the street - the site of 200 skaters fired up was something to be hold. Traffic stopped. Pedestrians stopped. The chain of skaters moved westerly to the shoreline of Vancouver's harbour. Here there is a lovely paved trail called the Seawall. Rollerbladers, joggers and, of course, bike riders promptly moved aside as the group charged forward. There were a few near misses, but thankfully, the seething pack of skaters kept their wits. Along the way, the group met up twice to let the slower skaters catch up. The first time was at the Totem Poles. Look for a pic in the next issue of CW. Vancouver has a longboarding legacy that stretches back a few years. PD of Skull Skates has been at the forefront of skateboarding in Vancouver for years. The new generation of longboarders includes folks like Bricin Lyons and Mike and Tom of Landyachtz. Ryan Thiebold led this year's event due to the fact that Bricin is pushing a skate across Canada for breast cancer. Bricin, if you read this, we look forward to seeing you in Toronto sometime soon. Vancouver is THE place every longboarder on this planet should make a pilgrimage to. The people, the vibe, the scenery...I could go on and on. 100% pure stoke. |
