For Luna, Silverfish got word that dirty south native, texas outlaw, NBS member and Silverfish bro WillJ, was gunna be heading to Mississippi. We sent him off with a grip of stickers and a mission to bring back words on the session, his reporting follows.
And it doesn't get much more welcoming than LSJ and RKR. Before we get started with race reports, weather reports, and police reports; it's got to be said, everyone would have had wayyyy to much fun for their own good if there weren't "inclement atmospheric conditions" aka "the R word". You'd be superstitious too if you lived in the "i.a.c."-forests that are the southeast U.S..
Anyways, on Friday the official Pocket Pistol Cinco De Mayo Outlaw Jam got started in the early afternoon for those that had arrived and were arriving. The course was, um, challenging... Ok, ok, it was tightish slalom, something I don't and won't "practice" for various reasons etc... BUT, I had a great time trying to get through the cones in one piece on my BW24; which is a great tight slalom board, one of the few I find very comfortable and natural to ride.
Ricky set a great, punishing, course. Starting with some 6-footers that followed a slight curve into some longer sets with offsets that curves back into the final tighter straight section (look at the pics), don't know how many cones exactly as I was trying not to throw my hip out doing the "tight slalom twitch". Hollien won on his last run I believe, as Harms looked too fast to beat until he paid the price on his last run. I was standing by the timing table and we all watched intently as the run was blazing, on the last cone it seemed Harms turned a touch too much and proceeded to meet Brutus Blacktop. With a gruesome, graceful slam that he bounced back from quickly, I was surprised to see him killing the course on sat during practice and qualifying. Coming in 3rd, the most stylish of the stylish, our very own Texas Outlaw, Gumby. This skater has a natural style that goes back to true old-school Texas ripping, and is always a wonder to watch on any terrain. 4th went to the sleeper, Evan "The Saint". WHERE THE HELL DID THIS GUY COME FROM. Dayum North Carolinian is very, very fast, stylish, and humble. The DHB's quit sandbagging this race and sent out the big-gun and showed what they were made of; worried about em, maybe a lil. Another Outlaw newbie to slalom took 5th, Big Ryan holds it town proper for the Lone Star. Philthy, 15yr old Josh Byrd, Ricky Byrd (proud father of 2 ripping skaters, Josh and Sarah, and local Jackson style master),GoGoGoad, and Chi-Ill Chris Favaro rounded out the top 10. Larry Scalzo, another Jackson local, who's been slaloming for a short time, spanked me and edged into 12th by a lil over a 10th of a sec. That's the last time I give equipment tips before a race, I |
