On November 18, the All Girl Skate Jam went down at the Girl Scouts of America San Diego/Imperial Council headquarters in San Diego, CA. Patty Segovia-Krause gathered up 17 professional and amateur skateboarding women to teach about 150 Girl Scouts how to skate. All Girls Skate Jam Rips It WithThe Girls Scouts Over 60 complete decks, helmets, pads, and swag were donated by Vans, Powell, Arbor, Birdhouse, Flip, Tracker, Khiro, OS3, 187, McGill’s Skateshop, Sk8kings, and La Costa Boys Racing. Girls as young as 5 were divided into groups, according to age and skill level. Basic skills were taught, such as pushing, stopping, and navigating through cones (the American Slalom Skateboard Association insurance ensured that slalom was showcased at the event). The more advanced girls learned ollies and basic street/freestyle tricks. Nobody was seriously hurt, and everyone had a great time.
The instructors and staff gave a demo midway through the day that included jumping over girl scouts (a la Tony Magnusson), street tricks, sliding, and slalom. Instructors included: Heidi Fitzgerald, Lynn Kramer, Cressy Rice, Melissa Spillman, Quyn Le, Lala Haskins, Hurvey Haskins, Gabe, Adriana, Bugs, Amee Jay Papelera, Allysha Bergado, Sheena Casamassima, Chris Cope, Sunny, and her daughters Carly, and Caity. The event was aired on TV that night, and was reported in the San Diego Union-Tribune. Hopefully, the Girl Scouts will team up with the All Girl Skate Jam again. Who knows, maybe one day skateboarding will be a Merit Badge. The support staff worked hard setting up the event, building lots of skateboards, and passing out Kronik energy drinks. They included: MC Jimmy the Greek, Carol Baldwin, Robert Segovia, Carmen Diaz, Tim Rice, Jen Hall, Sean Lynn, Jeanni, and Julian Hensley. Words by Lynn Kramer Photos Courtesy of All Girl Skate Jam |
