Bad News Dept: Montreal's Top Challenge is Cancelled. The '08 edition of this multidisciplinary event has been cancelled, according to event organizers, who reported,"A new comitee to protect the Parc du Mont-Royal has convinced the city to stop allowing permits for events that last more than 24 hours..." [International coverage of downhill racing continues on the 'fish with all the information you need for the Peyragudes Downhill Championship put on by BLC and IGSA in Peyragudes, Haute Garonne. Read on for all the specifics to the event that will span 5 days and include five downhill disciplines.]
From July 9th to July 12th, the BLC organizes with the support of the French Federation of Roller Skating, and the IGSA (international Gravity Sports Association). One of the six runs for Downhill World Cup (Roller Inline, Buttboard, Longskate and Streetluge) on the road to the ski resort of Peyragudes in Haute Garonne.
The French Federation of Roller skating has commissioned the association ‘Bordeaux Longskate Club’ to organize for the second time a race of the Downhill French Championship in the Pyrénées.
The IGSA has also chosen France and the Bordeaux Longskate Club to welcome one of the six races for the World Cup (France, Austria, Australia, Germany, USA, South Africa).
The Peyragudes ski resort, in the heart of Pyrénées, will welcome us in a magnificent natural area. The entire ski resort is committed to prepare an unforgettable journey.
Over 100 downhill racers will come from all over the world to fight to win the race in order to score high for the World Title... Enough to expect some exciting duels and a great show in a superb place!
This four-day competition is opened to all members of the French Federation of Roller Skating and to international competitors. Therefore, we can expect to see top racers ride at speeds over 100 km/h to win.
The top 100 of international downhill riders and the French champion in 2007 will come. We remind you that the world champion of butt-board for 2007 is Jonathan Blottier, a French rider as the world champion of Streetluge for 2007 is Gauthier Dekyndt
Schedule : 4 races for the competition:
Buttboard Streetluge Longskate Downhill Rollers For show : Skullboard
The downhill world cup brings together the following sports:
Longskate
The competitors ride in groups of 4 on the same path. Only the 2 best times are qualified for the following step and so forth until the final. Only the best 64 qualification times attend the last runs. (Downhill) Longskate is not practiced in a skatepark, but on the road that is usually on few kilometers in length. Longskaters use the same protection as bikers (helmet, leather suit, back protection, and specific gloves). They stand up on one-meter-long boards, called longskates. On the Peyragudes road, speeds exceeding 90 km/h are expected.
Confirmed Riders for the Peyragudes Deluxe CUP: World and Europe Champion : Martin Siegrist (Switzerland). French Champion 2007 : Sébastien Tournissac World Female Champion 2007 : Yolanda Bugler (Germany) World Female Champion 2005 / 2006 : Angelina Nobre
Buttboard :
Very similar to longskate, the difference of buttboards is that the riders are in the laid-down position on the board. With this position, the riders reach higher speed than longskaters because of a slightly lower aerodynamic factor. The boards comply with specific rules and, therefore, are very similar : it’s all about “driving”
During final runs, competitors ride as in a ‘Grand Prix’: by groups of 12, postions are defined by qualification times. The show is made with 12 riders on curves.
Confirmed Riders for the Peyragudes Deluxe CUP : World champion 2007, Jonathan Blottier (France, ‘Alsace Downhill’). European and French champion 2007 : Sébastien Tournissac (France)
Streetluge :
Out of the 4-rider battle, only 2 are qualified for the following stage. The Streetluge comes from the butt-board, as the riders are laid down on their board as well. However, the classic skateboard is replaced by an aluminum frame with a foot-rest. The lowered center of gravity and the small wind resistance bring better stability allowing higher speeds than any other downhill sports. An entire downhill road is absolutely requested as it is very tough to stop and push again. A minimum speed is necessary to understand how it works; The best riders exceed 100 km/h in the final schuss!
Riders confirmed for the Peyragudes Deluxe CUP : World Champion, Gauthier Dekyndt (France, ‘Alsace Downhill’). Europe Champion, Eugen Forschner (Germany)
Roller :
The riders start 1 by 1 and try to achieve the best time on the same course... This sport, Rollerblading skating, better known by the public, can be practiced downhill. Rollers are equipped with 5 and even 6 wheels for higher speeds and better stability. Classic protections (elbow, knee, fist pads) are not enough for this sport, therefore riders use the same protections than longskaters, that is to say bikers protection with helmet in case of a fall. This practice of rollers attracts more and more riders looking for roads to ride. Only times count here !
Riders confirmed for the Peyragudes Deluxe CUP : World Champion 2007, Scott Peer (USA) French Champion 2007, Matthieu Prudent (‘spuc roller’)
Skullboard :
The Skeleton of the road ! The ride is practiced with the head facing the road, laid down on a board with a brake system under the belly. The reached speeds are amazing and adrenalin flows on the road.
The skullboard is a sport independent from the French traditional circuit and whose champion is Gregory Gerber (‘Bordeaux longskate Club’). This sport will be for show at the World championship.
Confirmed Riders for the Peyragudes Deluxe CUP : Gregory Gerber, champion of France (‘Bordeaux Longskate Club’)

Registered at the ‘Préfécture’ (local authority) on April 24th, 2002, the Bordeaux Longskate Club is an association referring to the association act of 1901. The club, member of the French Federation of Roller Skating since July 3rd 2002, is therefore authorized by the National Department for Youth and Sports. The Bordeaux Longskate Club gathers 22 registered riders and about 50 sympathizers at the end of the 2007/2008 year. We aim at proposing different services, informing, supporting safe practices for the present and future riders (longskater or downhill rollers) in the French South-Western region. From the early beginning, we have published a website;
Come to visit us at : www.bordeaux-longskate-club.com This website offers a forum which allows members to exchange information and opinions about their favorite sport. Some members usually attend World cups and French championships. We organized in 2004 and in 2005 a « freeride » on the Hautacam (65) gathering over 100 riders from all over France, during a whole weekend. The Hautacam Downhill freeride occurs on a protected 3- kilometer long road, with an average slope of 8%.
2006 was a fantastic year as Hautacam was chosen to be the last race for the French downhill championship ! In 2007, Hautacam Downhill was again included in the French championship but also in the IGSA World Cup, as a “National” race. In 2008, we organize an IGSA World Cup race in Peyragudes, still in the Pyrénées.
