Round #3 of the 2006-2007 IGSA California Downhill Series was held on February 10th under beautiful, sunny, Southern California skies. It was a day dominated by veteran competitors including a surprise showing by a multiple X Games Gold Medalist. As always, the racing at Bonelli Park in San Dimas, CA was hotly contested and hard fought. DeKeyser leading Farmery, as J.Rogers and Sakamoto scheme. In the days leading up to the race, the weather forecast kept predicting rain showers for race day. The result was a lighter racer turnout than usual and a pair of nervous race promoters who always dread constructing and tearing down a race venue in the rain. Fortunately the weather forecasters were wrong and a typical warm and sunny, Southern California day greeted us all.
It's sunny here. Where are you?! Qualifying in the Downhill Skateboarding class was led by John Rogers with Brent DeKeyser second and newcomer Josh Weisfeld in third. DeKeyser has decided to move back to Michigan so this was his California farewell race. Weisfeld, who is originally from Hawaii and currently attending college in Colorado, put in a very impressive qualifying performance. He out qualified veteran Danny Conner in 4th and 2006 IGSA North American Champion Noah Sakamoto in 5h Weisfeld makes a run for the line. In Street Luge, double X Games Gold Medalist Rat Sult of Temecula, CA was a surprise entry. To commemorate his 97’ double gold performance, Rat decided to come out to Bonelli with a film crew in tow, and race. In qualifying he quickly showed that he meant business when he laid down a time nearly a full second faster than second placed Brian Lee. Fifteen-year-old Riley Meehan was third .2 seconds behind Lee. Justin Tolman was fourth and Mike McIntyre rounded out the top five. Rat Sult, dropping down the hill ahead of the pack. Top qualifiers in the other classes were Riley Meehan in Jr. Downhill Skateboarding and Classic Luge, Dave Lambert in Downhill Inline Skating, and Noah Rutherford in both of the Gravity Bike categories. Lambert's new speedsuit wasn't the only gold he'd wear today. Once it came time for the bracket racing, John Rogers dominated the Sector Nine Downhill Skateboarding race. He won each of his heat races, took his second win in three events and extended his season points lead. Rogers was followed by DeKeyser in second, Canada’s Daniel Farmery in third, and Sakamoto finishing fourth. Josh Weisfeld won the consolation final and was credited with fifth place.
