Hollywood tends to kill the things we love the most. With few exceptions the hands of media greed and uninformed inspiration throttle the jugular of our favorite memories and stories. Assuming the worst often seems the best idea however with a clear mind and almost eager hesitation I entered the theatre to watch
Within the first five minutes I was enthralled the movie rolled on with momentum and direction. The skate footage itself was solid and flowed with the story well. There was no feeling of misplaced shots or trying to squeeze scenes in. The set details and era matching was superb with the era being displayed in all the period dress and speech. It was often hard to realize the gravity of what was being watched on screen. With the DTZB movie it was all past tense and tales of stories gone by. We all knew what happened since then. The heroes and the strife. With LODT there was a sense that was real it was solid, we were witness to not just the genesis of an entire culture more purely a story standing solid to portray the motions of these boys lives.
As the movie rolls on it dells deeper into the internal team strife. As well as the eventuality mortality of the zephyr team. The conflict between the overlooked nature of Stacy, the rock star mentality of Alva. As well as the aspect of survival that Jay seemed to represent. I found the movie focused mainly on this dynamic. My only complaint in the movie came at this point. Like Veruca Salt I found myself wanting to see more of the era characters and more cameos. Not that there was a small amount of these, there were many. With almost every scene carrying a cameo of some well known skater (Tony Hawk, Chris Chaput, Tony Alva, the list is long see below). It is a fulfilling ride even without the quality footage, reliable story and growing emotion. Spend your time watching it again and again to catch it all. With a full length movie that seemed to fly by with the momentum of a well bombed hill I did not find it lacking.
