Bad News Dept: Montreal's Top Challenge is Cancelled. The '08 edition of this multidisciplinary event has been cancelled, according to event organizers, who reported,"A new comitee to protect the Parc du Mont-Royal has convinced the city to stop allowing permits for events that last more than 24 hours..." This reduces the major events for '08, leaving only Munnsville for large, East Coast races. |

[We ran into these guys at ASR, liked the look of their boards and were intrigued with the idea of building boards from reclaimed material, they were kind enough to send us a killer write-up about themselves, their company and their boards.]
Jeff Smith and I had our passion for skateboarding rejuvenated the summer of 2002. I was raised on the west coast in the “Dog Town” era of skating, Jeff, here in Colorado. In the spring of 03 Jeff made our first vertically laminated hardwood deck. We had been riding a variety of ply, mass production boards that suited our purpose but had no real esthetic value. Jeff’s was a beautiful board, reminiscent of the surfing longboards of old. But as time would reveal and with the help of Rob McKendry, we discovered that solid hardwood decks can crack. Not willing to give up, we searched for ways to resolve this issue.
The answer we found was in fiberglass. Fiberglass could give the boards all the strength they required with out forfeiting the esthetic beauty of the boards, after all, it had been used in the surfing and sailing worlds for years. We began to produce small quantities of these second generation boards under the name “JSD Longboards.” Most of our boards were made from re-claimed hardwoods found on construction sites. (We continue to use reclaimed woods in the construction of our custom boards today). Both of us have families, fulltime jobs and a skating fetish.
It became evident that making these boards was going to continue to be just a hobby unless we moved out of Jeff’s garage, ramped up production and created something that could be duplicated. In the summer of 07 we changed the name to Street Swell Inc. (a brain child of my daughter Karlie) and moved production to California. The majority of the custom boards are still made here in Colorado. Our goal is to make a board that will last a lifetime and give its owner something unique, with personality and a good quality ride. I think we have achieved that .In 09 we hope to add a couple of carbon fiber boards, a speed board and a few new shapes. We look forward to being around for years to come and are very much enjoying the moment. Check out Street Swell on the web @ http://www.streetswell.com/
