It was called the V.C. bowl because it was located in the avocado groves in Valley Center, California. The V.C. Bowl was a reservoir that serviced the avocado trees that surrounded it.  It was about 50’ long, 25’ wide and had a 15’ deep that flowed into a 4’ shallow end with a surrounding side walk deck.

The bowl was perfect for sk8ting.  It’s hard to believe those who built it never had skating in mind and never dreamed anyone would. It became a skater’s paradise. It had a perfectly round lip and a killer transition. The smoothness of the cement made it so you could glide around the bowl as long as your stamina allowed. The hard paved bowl had no seams. It was free of kinks and bumps. Most of the time, the deep end had a foot or two of water, rocks and wood in it, but you could carve around, no problem.

I did get to ride it fully cleaned, which made the deep end fully workable. The V.C. bowl has been the influence of many sk8 park flow areas and there’ve been a few attempts to duplicate it. Still its unintentional perfection has never been achieved.

The V.C. Bowl was well documented with photos and film, which are now very valuable and hard to find. I only have a few photos of myself riding V.C. These were taken by an unknown photog with a snapshot camera, even thought I was lucky to ride it quite a few times.

Gunner Hougo turned my best sk8 bro at the time “Art Rat” and I onto the V.C. Bowl. I can’t remember how to get there, but rumor has it that it’s still out there (truth or not I don’t know) . If anyone knows for sure, let us know!!

It must have been built in the 50’s and 60’s and was sk8ed for about 3 years until the owner put an end to it. The sk8 life of the V.C. was some where around 1975 to 1978. If someone knows the exact dates, we would love to hear about it.
This square shaped resie with rounded corners is the most awesome resie ever skated in San Diego , maybe the world. Literally a historical skate spot.
