Alfuso: The man behind the camera

MikeAlfuso1

Michael Alfuso, a local student sat across the table from me at a coffee shop in Northridge, Calif. He had a mangy black beard, much like mine and he made the joke that we must look like two hobos. Sitting next to a large black hard-cased piece of luggage he got up to order coffee and said, “watch this for me, it has half my life’s work on hard drives in it.” He returned with a small coffee, no cream, no sugar.

“I grew up in Tustin, Calif., where money was everything,” said Michael Alfuso, “but it meant nothing to my family.” Alfuso, a CTVA Major at California State University Northridge, grew up with a musically inclined middle class family in an elitist community. His parents taught him that modesty goes along way says Alfuso.

“I always found it odd that, [at school], kids were picked on not for looking a certain way or for GPA’s but based on the car they drove. My car in high school was a small beat up truck; every other guy had brand new, lifted, full sized pickups,” said Alfuso, now 21 years old, "but I was cool with it".

This is the sort of article we hate to see, and simply wish we could see much less of. That being said, it is essential we share this unflinching look at what head trauma without protection can do. We applaud the convition of Ernie to share his story and impress upon all of us how important safety and wearing a helmet really is.·

Interviews

As part of our ongoing series of articles interviewing the athletes and covering the scene around the sport of distance skateboarding, our man Chris Yandall took some time to chat with two of the strongest, fastest and stokedest women you may ever be lucky enough to longboard with...

Sara Paulshock and Cami Best

The Ruling Ladies of Distance Skateboarding

Sara Paulshock and Cami Best are currently the top 2 female Marathon Longboarders in the world, having traded  1st and 2nd place in the womens' division at the first two Adrenalina-sponsored USADSA sanctioned contests.  This means they've been hauling down top prizes after training and racing.  Having been around the distance skateboarding scene since the famous shot heard around the world in November 2010 at the Hallendale, FL race, I’ve gotten to chat with both of these women and feel they have lots to say  about the racing scene and all the females involved. Let’s see what thrills them into racing these gruesome 26.2 mile marathons besides the cash.

The Bronx Skaterboi Keifer Dixon

Kiefer-Dixon-al-cruzar-la-meta

21 years old from the Bronx, 5’8” 149 lbs, Kiefer Dixon wins the 2011 Puerto Rico Adrenalina Marathon with a strong set of legs and a top mount board with ABEC11  Fly Wheels, 125 Randals and a Flexy Pintail.  Kiefer prefers pushing with one leg sprints and uses both legs to push only uphills.  Once Kiefer masters sprinting with both legs, watch out!!! He actually will sprint 26.2 miles with one leg if a course is completely flat!  A quiet kind of guy that lets his pushing do the talking and here’s a few notes on him and his life.

Give us some background where you came from. (start anywhere in your life, family life, brothers, sisters and parents etc... got a girl friend? )

I’m from the Bronx, Ive always been a solo skater doing my own thing. My mother bought me a skateboard, skateboard trucks, and some longboard wheels some time ago and the rest was up to me. I got a rap for myself in the Bronx as skaterboi because I was always skating in rain, heat wave, sunshine, hail, snow storms all weather nothing could really stop me. One day I got tired of skating the same places in the Bronx all the time so I went exploring south. I skated the whole Bronx north to south in 30 min or so and wondered into Harlem (upper Manhattan). I ended skating to 42nd St and that was the begining of everything. I’ve taught my brother to skate an he has gotten better but he is still lazy. I’ve also taught my girlfriend to skate so that’s something that we share together, but I’m the one that goes out and does the crazy stuff, shes not a racer.

Who is Paul Kent?

1

Marion Spears Karr, recently hosted and completed in May 2011, an epic long-distance skateboarding historical event called the “The Chief Ladiga Silver Comet Sk8 Challenge” . The very first of it’s kind. A gruelling 3 day event of 40, 50 and 98 mile race pushing longboards. At the end of this colossal event stood a proud young humble man that seemed to take the win in stride. To most of us that have been tracking the successes of long distance riding, it was no surprise claiming this event’s victory since he’s been documented as crossing continents on his skateboard. In his home town, pushing up hills is a common occurrence along with daily long distance riding so the stage was set for him to podium this contest with only one real competitor in close proximity(click to last interview I did with Jeffury Vyain). After the event, we had to get an idea of who this road wizard was, and what he is all about.
