As part of our ongoing series of guest editiorials, stories and scene reports by Jeff "JT" Tatum, he sends us this updated riff on skateboarding media... I’ve experienced just about every skate mag published since the early 70’s. Skate mags today, unfortunately, have become very predictable. There’s a few that cater to the slam -bash, street -riding punk kids with the skate and destroy mentality that still live with their parents, jobless and pissed off at the world. There’s a few that cater supposedly to the overall "extreme sports person" that’s involved in all the x-sports, surfing, skating, wakeboarding, BMX, snowboarding, motocross, etc... even throwing in some music stuff which results in a kind of confusing mess: I don’t know of anyone that practices all these sports. Most people only have the time and money to be into one to maybe three x-sports, at the most. For most readers, the contents of multi mags go unappreciated. But what do I know, they seem to sell!

Jay Adams is arguably one of the most important and, without argument, one of the most influential skateboarders of all time. In several weeks, we'll release "Jay Boy: Classic Photographs by Jay Adams' stepfather, Kent Sherwood", a book of photos and text.
Jay's stepfather, Kent Sherwood, was one of the founders of Z-Flex skateboards in 1976 and was also an amateur photographer with skills. We’ve put together a book of photographs of the legend as a boy, taken by Kent. A hardcover book, it’s 9.5" wide by7.5" tall, and just under one hundred pages. Mostly classic black and white and a few color shots, primarily of Jay, and others including his friends Wentzle Ruml, Shogo Kubo, Tony Alva, "Baby" Paul Cullen, Roy Jamison and more! Skating, surfing, and just around the house. Jay has handwritten all of the captions himself while incarcerated this past summer. This is the public's first look at the material, only on Silverfish Longboarding.

Over the past few years there have been a number of great books that cover the gamut as far as Skateboarding, its origins, the art, the decks, the music, the people and the ink. There are not many books, however, that deal with the sociological issues surrounding skateboarding as a culture. With the numbers of skaters growing and a new breed of self actualized skaters evolving, it would make sense that we would start to see texts delving into the issues surrounding us as a culture.

Do you skate parks? Do you live on the West Coast? If your answer was yes to either of these questions you need to pick up a copy of Best Of the West. The guide covers Arizona, California, Oregon, and Washington. Judged with a solid rating system and including details of the parks like phone, water, restroom, and other pertinent information. Filled with lots of eye candy and visually engaging spreads showing what the parks have to offer. The descriptions are detailed enough to almost find the line in your mind. The guide appears to cover many of the well known parks as well as some hidden local favorites. Making plans for a West Coast road trip what better reason for stopping by Orcas Island.
Drop by Tailtap.com to pick up a copy and at less than 10$ it's well worth it.

Hollywood tends to kill the things we love the most. With few exceptions the hands of media greed and uninformed inspiration throttle the jugular of our favorite memories and stories. Assuming the worst often seems the best idea however with a clear mind and almost eager hesitation I entered the theatre to watch
