I think Toms Sims, Ed Economy, Bruce Walker and some others were "longboarding" in the '70s and they're designs were called "longboards." SKATEBOARDER even did a feature on "longboarding."

So, the name's been around a lot longer than since the '90s.

No #### Sherlock, only it wasn't called "longboarding" (one word.) They were just long boards.

i hate it when journalists write stories when they clearly haven't done a sufficient or appropriate amount of research

and 10 miles aint sheeeeeiiit
probably took like 50 mins whereas i can see it taking even longer with this freaking pole thing.

i guess i just feel like there are companies way more deserving on recognition in a USA today story than this one
thats what i thought, longboarders were the first skaters, until the 90's when "skateboarding" become a fad, and true skating went underground, now journalists get the idea that longboarding is some new crazy sport, because it's starting to come out into the open again. and EC, people were riding longboards before even you were born, well maybe, actually no. whats it like being old? you saw a lot of #### go down, like slavery, the boat, julias caesar....

in the 1950's people began unscrewing the handlebars from their scooters. and the skateboard was born, eventauly someone created the first skateboard, that contained all the elements of a longboard, big wheels, trucks that turn more than those on your typical skateboard, although it was shorter than a skateboard.

im pretty sure that's right, correct me if im wrong.

this may be the only thing that EC has ever said that i agree with

As far as SUP goes I really don't want to bash it because I have never had to opportunity to try it up here in New England. As much as I would like to try it I really rather not spend $90+ to find out it may be something I don't like at all.

As far as the classifications of longboards and street boards go I think the difficult in the situation is that they both came from the same roots but managed to slowly evolve in separate directions with differing subcultures surrounding them. With this slow evolution the real problem becomes where can we stop along this time line and say "This is a longboard for sure" and "This is a street deck for sure".

Furthermore if the discussion is brought up to the present there are still some crossover type boards such as the zip-singer that add to the confusion. It could be used as an effective mini longboard as well as it could be used as a trick board with appropriate setups for each genre.

tl;dr
-I don't feel like spending that much on a big stick.
-There is no definite and distinct black and white for anything, including skating.

"Mini longboard" - what the hell is that?

Like the morons who came up with the term "extended mini-van"... Um... Yeah. Isn't that just... a van?

Isn't a "mini-longboard" just... a shortboard?

I think from now on, I'm gonna call my longboards, "extended mini-longboards" just to mess with people.

"Is that a longboard?"

"No. It's an extended-mini-longboard."

"... Huh?"

Yep, along with Jeff Tatum, Frank Blood, Brad Strandlund, Ed Economy, Steve Monahan, Richard Vanderwyck, and plenty of others (and most of those guys were sponsored by Sims). And then there were the guys who alternated between short and longboards, like Wally Inouye, Chris Chaput, and Chris Strople. And even myself: I competed in several pool and halfpipe contests in the late 70s on a longboard, and by 1980, was riding one nearly full time...

The terms "longboarding" and "longboarder" were in common usage back in the 70s. Even the "Cult Of The Longboard" article from the 70s uses the terms "longboard", "longboarding", and "longboarder" about 20 times ("A 22' wide half pipe may offer the longboarder two hundred possible lines and the short board rider, twice that many")

The answer is simple: a longboard is... LONG! If it isn't long, then it isn't a longboard. Longboarding is the act of riding a longboard. Much of what stylistically is referred to as "longboarding" originated on what were standard skateboards 20-40 years ago. Does that mean that all skaters back in the 70s were longboarders? All the basics of modern street skating originated on boards totally unlike the modern street deck, on what now would be considered freestyle, oldschool vert, minis, or longboards.

Street decks are a subset of "short boards", which are a subset of "skateboards". Longboards are also a subset of "skateboards"...

My cousin bought a big stick, used it once or twice, then abandoned it at my house. Not hating or judging, but I've never felt the need to pick it up. Doesn't make that much sense for city riding in traffic on hills. But at last year's Central Park Race there was a guy just rocking out with one, pushing up the hills and pivoting carves off it on the downhills. Envied him around mile five....

/relevant posting. Back to the scrum....

Not really. Just because some editor called it longboarding doesn't mean anyone else did. If they were still nailing on trucks in 1972 like the article purports then they were about 12 years begind the times. And I don't give a #### what they were doing in Santa Barbara in 1978. Sims boards were way overpriced for what you got. And 6 foot boards were stupid then and they are stupid now.

People did not say "longboarding" back then. They called it skating.

people call it skating now, and if that guy called it longboarding, then other people called it longboarding, he had to have a reason for calling it that. also, whats wrong with 6 foot boards, lots of footspace for dancing, easy nose manuals, they just must be a pain to carry around. one more thing, you still havent answered my question, what do you expect to accomplish from all these e fights youve been picking, they make no sense, and you sound like a cranky old man.
