How short the memories. Anybody remember a little innocent "fun" last year at the campgrounds at Maryhill??? Flour spread around, paint on some haybales. Most was nothing that couldn't be cleaned up. But it still blew OUR reputation as a community, and there was serious talk of us not being invited back.

Who made that right? A large number of fellow skaters who neither participated in the action, or who were even there sent in money, and a very small number of dedicated folks went in for a workday to show good faith.

Those actions quite probably enabled MH to go off this year.

I can guess his situation, and it's most likely middle-upper class white boy that thinks the man has him down because he isn't allowed to skate somewhere(due to actions like this) and his life is terrible even though mommy and daddy are paying his college tuition. That's the most likely case scenario, and the one I would guess.
Urban areas are not meant to destroy. They are full of people living in desperation and continually being held down often by their own misdirection. The nicer urban areas are meant for yuppies with pretty things and condos. That's why I choose to live in a rural area, where I can do what I want when I want and make all the noise I want without bothering anyone. Nothing beats living somewhere you can have a ramp, shoot guns, build bonfires, blow stuff up and play loud music at anytime of day or night and it's cool. I have no reason to visit fancy yuppie areas, but I have no reason to ef them up either.

All in all, there are too many people in too close proximity to one another.. Lock a bunch of humans up in a restrictive area, and you will have this kind of act.. When territory is a more sacred part of our existence, behave. 'Round these parts.. people know what's mine, and what's theirs.. I respect "theirs" and they respect "mine" And when in an urban surrounding the term "ours" lends itself to selfish people claiming the right to destroy...

A local group in my area would host concerts with like...10 or more bands from the local area it'd be a whole day event, they'd provide food promote acts, give all the profit to charity. When one rec-center decided they didn't like teenagers and kicked everyone out, #### hit the fan. They got to put on another show at a local fairground, then people busted some windows and caused trouble, so they weren't allowed back. This is the sort of thing that keeps happening, and it's because some kids think it's okay to ruin other people's property.

Now the community doesn't have anything better than the occasional basement show, and decent event for kids to go to every couple months is dead, because of dumb teens mucking it up.

Take any poor, de-industrialized, urban area and you'll find large empty properties that are perfect to "have a ramp, shoot guns, build bonfires, blow stuff up and play loud music at anytime of day or night".

When a DIY music venue gets shut down.. Whose fault is it? How much noise/vandalism is beyond reason?

You're limited by the most conservative crotchety neighbor. Organizers are then put in the position of imposing those values second hand whether they agree with them or not. It can be easy to lose a sense of proportion in that context.. a minor infraction gets equated with threatening the existence of the spot.

There's no right or wrong in situations like this.. it's an ongoing negotiation of how we share space. There's a wide variety of ways to make things work. I would offer to soundproof a neighbors bedroom, or repair any damages, or pay slightly more taxes.. it's more fun than policing myself and my friends.

Honestly the picture is beautiful. The glass caught as its shattering. Its ugly safety glass either. You can see every shard flying apart. I think its a metaphor for how fragile our lives our. That at any moment we could be broken and thrown out of place. How easily we can lose our selves in this dangerous world. Our lives are only held in place by the those around us. When some of us fall we all fall. We have a responsibility to stick together. Also the glass plane is ugly. Its boring and drab. Only in its destruction is it beautiful. Maybe we can only see the true beauty of our lives as they are falling apart. We can only truly appreciate our lives as they are shattered into a million pieces.

This stuff gets better and better, and the excuses regarding vandalism, sharing space, and the right to skate are just comical beyond belief. IT'S NOT YOURS TO EVEN MAKE THAT CALL!

The short of it is, if the property in question sustains some sort of a event (without permission) through actions that it was not intended for, requiring someone else (the owner or controller of the property) to expend energy, dollars, and/or time to restore to the condition they want or need it, then it is vandalism.

And guess what? vandalism is punishable through the local laws. Thats the reality of it. It does not matter if you are a victim of society because you feel the city OWES you the right to skate, or that the property is perfect, or if you feel the need to destroy something, or simply because you are an angry mallboarder.

A transition occurred in skateboarding (79-83, effectively), what was before the transition and after the transition did not bare any real simularity. Prior to the transition it was about skateboarding, an activity in which utilizing the board and terrain was what it was all about. After the transition, a bad thing was added into the mix. That was the addition of "this is what skateboarders should do and be". I wont go into detail, but I will say that punk rock had a huge hand in it. The handwriting was on the wall as early as 84/85. Skateboarding had changed to an attitude as opposed to an action.

The skaters which began after the transition know of it no other way. Since pretty much the whole market and media were established after the transition, then it is what it is. Talk to anyone that went thru the transition, the stories are all the same; so it isn't just one person's take on it. However since skateboarding is about now, and it always has been, then what was then is no longer. Its just the way it is. Skateboarding now is about lifestyle, attitude, and the skateboard is the means to it: a sort of accessory.

Advertising/marketing influences every one. From what clothes you wear to what you eat,car you drive,board you skate. Peer pressure as well. Is this the message/image that the skate community wants? A praking garage is now of limits because some dumb ass skaters vandalized the fire extinguishers. WTF!!! Ruined it for every one in the skate community. When you are skating you are the advertisement!What message are you sending?
