"yeah and that's what i used to tell my mom when i kicked my little brother"
that video was great. i woulda just put a ####### dent in his car with my board.
lol hmm probably not the smartest idea... destroying government property is a felony.... idiot... oh wait I should have just let him do it so he could have found that out the hard way...
bottom line... you act like a dick to the cops they will take you to jail... Idk about you but sitting in jail for calling a cop a fvcking dick doesn't seem like something I want to do...
You respect the cops and they will give you the same respect... simple as that...
Sitting in jail is the easy part. It's making the phone call to mom to tell her to call a bail bondsman and put up bail. Then going to the processing center for pick up. Then hiring an attorney for 1500 bucks bare minimum and having to go to court. It's not a speeding ticket so they can't just hire The Ticket Clinic for 50 bucks and get off with no points and traffic school.
Least case scenario, he'll get 6 months probation and community service and a 1000.00 fine.
That's an awful lot for opening his mouth. Think it was worth it?

About that crime. I wonder if they made it a crime due to liability issues? There are so many hills in that city. I have been there and love it. I wonder if they were having issues with a lot of skaters getting injured. Then couple that with the few skaters that do vandalize/deface public property, and the small occurrence of the "Drug Culture" among skaters where everyone just assumes all of us are on something. Looking at those few things I would think the local Govt. made it illegal, not to bust every skater in the city, but to give the police one more reason to stop and search/detain a skater to weed out (no pun intended) the violators. Like the vid showed. The officer was gonna let them go even after they were messing with public property. So the police (even the jerks) have the discretion to just tell the skaters to stop skating and move on. But if you look and listen in the start of the vid, he is on the opposite side of the street calling in the information of each skater. That means he was doing and warrant/criminal history check to see if they are in violation of something else. So if one of them had a warrant, he would be brought in but the officer needed the original offense of "Skating" to show probable cause to search/detain and or do a precautionary records check. It's just like loitering or hanging out on a street corner. Police can stop and search you for doing that no questions asked because of drug dealing and other offenses that have been made by hanging out "loitering" on a street corner. But if you come up clean they just tell you to move on and they are out of your hair.
I know it's hard to swallow up the validity of these offenses, but somewhere a group of people in elected positions are involved with these laws being put into practice. Right or wrong you have to live with it or move elsewhere. If you really wanna do something about it, write your local Govt., and more importantly VOTE. These kind of laws can and have been overturned. Use your rights as a citizen to fight back. Just don't be a smart ass or a jerk about it. Be judicial and come to the table prepared to make a valid arguement. One that is better than. "#### the police" or "They have nothing better to do". The worst part? This cop, being a city officer likely did have something better to do. He was likely more frustrated that he had to do this because the original call for him to go there came in. What happened after he arrived on scene is a different story.
I am done with this thread because we are all gonna have our own opinions. I am not likely gonna change any of yours so it's a moot point in the end I guess.
I agree completely, and I do side with the cop because he wasn't the one who made the rule, he just enforces it. I guess I was just a little surprised on how the cop told him what his offense was, because skateboarding wasn't the only thing he was doing. Either way, moral of the story is be cool to cops. They're out there doing their job just like anyone else, and if it weren't for this kid mouthing off to him this video probably wouldn't have been. I've encountered a ton of cops and security guards, and all of them have been completely reasonable, even if I (just like this kid) was in the wrong.
That'ssa a thread for me too I guess, I just wanted to set my opinion straight.

I think if the cop hadn't threatened the kid, I would be fine with it all. But it doesn't bother me that he threatened him anyway. The cop allowed them to leave but he decided to open his mouth. But that doesn't mean the cop is allowed to threaten him.
But Officer Rivieri.......Hes an asshole. But whatever. Not much you can do. Well I guess you can put it up on youtube and have it eventually get on the news. Which will make him look like an idiot.
Personally I've never ran into a cop like that. But i've only been skating for a couple months now so....And where I live your allowed to skateboard.......on the sidewalks but no one cares if you ride on the rode.
well being the "steriotypical rebelious teenager" i am i think that just because an officer is wearing a uniform and has a gun that they dont deseve more respect, today skating my high school campus after school a cop comes my friends and i hav watchers and code words like "oink oink" to warn when a cop is coming and apparently the cop heard that "oinking" and compltely flips out and says that he was and i quote " disresptecting my athority" and that he had no problem with us skating but with that set aside just with a few words he took our boards, carded us, and called our parents now was it really neccesary? my opinion is that cops are set out to make examples of people " wrong doings" to scare others into not doing so its bs dude
ready for flaming and bad rep

I won't give you bad rep because I don't think you know any better by the sound of your story. First off your code that a cop is near is "Oink Oink"? That is like yelling fire when you see a fire. Not very smart on your part. Other than that though it seems that most problems are with young teens. And this is evident from all the posts on here. Young people wanna act "Core" because it's the trend. Hating on most authority figures for the most part. And it's always the same tired old thing. "They have a badge and a gun and they think they are in charge" or whatever complaint you hear about police. They are just doing their jobs. If the sign says "No Skateboarding" or "No Loitering" or there is a law against it, then you are taking your chances. Add a smart mouth, any type of property damage or disrespect and you are gambling with your fate. History has shown that you are just gonna be wrong. In some cases you may have a valid argument but they are few and far between. Try growing up and following the rules. If you wanna be a rebel then deal with the consequences. No Police officer is going to let a teenager of any sort pull a fast one on on them. Teens that smart off and pull this kind of stuff may get a ticket and have their parents called. Once you get old enough you'll be sleeping in a cell. Keep up that kind of attitude and see where it gets you in life. This is a sport and is supposed to be fun. Don't cheapen it by making it harder for the rest of us.

I wanna go ahead and tell you that overall, I agree with you. Generally speaking, police officers are doing there job and a large number of teenagers are overtly disrespectful and rude. However, I also want to establish that a good percentage of those disrespectful and rude kids are merely frustrated with what, in their eyes, is wrong.
When a police officer uses a stern voice to assert their dominance in a situation, a young person will often see it as an abuse of an officer's power, rather than a safety issue for the officer. And in a young person's eyes a police officer's job SHOULD be to merely protect citizens. Therefore, young people often want to stand up for themselves, and what they believe is the moral high ground. They are just often not intelligent to realize that calling a cop names isn't going to get that accomplished.
Kids get frustrated. and scared. those "core" kids won't admit it, but when a cop comes and takes your ID, it's scary. they don't know what's going to happen. and with all this overflow of videos showcasing cops abusing their power, kids are even more frightened. Ignorance is not an excuse, but young people are at a large disadvantage when it comes to understanding how to handle a situation like this.
basically, what I'm saying is that it would probably be more effective if, when dealing with young people, a police officer didn't use his situation controlling techniques, and remained jovial and friendly until necessary.
there's my 2 cents.
I'm probably wrong, as I'm a young person. but in my defense, I'm not one of these kids. I know that a police officer is doing his job and that, if they tell me I am, I'm probably doing something wrong.

You are 100% correct in my eyes. If you combine what I said with your interjection, we have one complete thought lol +Rep to you.

This cop needs to chill opn the caffeine...I would have just taken off---look at the gut on that guy, he would never catch you...Put San Fran on the list of places I'll never live/go.
I can tell all the people hear bitching about the cop in the OP video have never had an actual bad cop harass them. I would kill to have cops like him in my area he seems like a legitimate guy to me.
He did nothing wrong, sure his headache comment can come across as rude, but I don't think that was his intent. He acted professionally and co-operated with the outsiders that were trying to escalate the situation. He was just going to let the group of kids go with a warning and one just had to be a tough, stereotype perpetuating jackass and make things sour.
core problem? - can't skate in SF
rude language? - yes but that's not the point.
result? - watch the video
who is right? - both act like what they are
The cop is a cop, as part of his job he needs to fine him or something despite the reality that skating there is not such a big deal and he could have said to stop and leave. But in reality what they did is just against the law and defending the law puts food on his table.
The skater...well he just wants to skate, you know what I mean if you are a skater too. Why? Cause that's what you do, skate, that's it. But...it's not allowed and there is no place else plus that spot must have been sweet. So he does it anyway, because that's what skaters do. It's totally worth a try.
I'm not saying that skateboarders are criminals, and that we should break the laws. But the fact is that laws are sometimes too literal or stupid, this here is an example:
A huge empty parking lot (after 7PM) with slopes is a great spot even though there is a sign that says "no skateboarding". Next to that sign there is another that says "parking on your own risk, the company will not be responsible for theft, damage to you or your vehicle as a result of being on this lot"
Now we know that riding the lot and going up and down slopes will not damage the asphalt. And even that falling on that lot will not bring the company it belongs to any problems. So we wonder why then? Exactly, no reason. Because it's theirs and they don't want anybody else to use it. That's it. Like a kid with his bike, not using it, but nobody else can ride it.
And that's why the skaters keeps getting in trouble. I've been there a million times, but just said ok and walked away. Personally I don't think wasting my time trying to prove a point to a bunch of robots is something I wanna do. But then again, that's just me.
Peace

For me it's about survival. I can't afford to pay fines, I don't want to sit in jail instead of being out skating. If I'm bombing a hill and I don't spot a cop and he pulls me over, he'll usually just yell at me about how I'm an idiot for a while. I've taken to just recording this on my MP3 player and not responding to anything I deem to be overly rude or unnecessarily aggressive. If the officer is polite, I am polite in return. I refer to him as Officer, inquire about his evening and if there is anything I can help with. Usually those ones just tell me to watch for traffic and stay off the road. As far as they know I don't ever skate on the road. And I survive to skate another day. Just like with people being robbed for stuff at gun point, which seems to be a problem lately, you basically have no choice.
And as for that vid, I actually side with the cop. It's a bummer that you can't skate anywhere, at all, ever in SF - but calling a cop a dick for doing his job isn't going to change that law.

after reading through this thread, i had to include that my home town cops are complete assholes. they all hate every type of skateboarding, and the only people that call them assholes, are the ones who have cause a night stick across your back for skating on the side walk and obeying the laws.
I wasn't doing any thing wrong. He told me to get off my board so I did. I kept walking, and he followed me home. I was in my driveway practicing some crosstepping and i lost control and went in the street. The fvcker was waiting for me, and hit me and told me to get the fvck out of the street.
So not all cops are nice. The common reality between cops and skaters are that they are mutually hated.
Sorry to any cops on the forum who skate, you have my respect.

I don't believe you. A cop is standing there, waiting for a 20 year old kid to cross the public/private line with his skateboard and then comes running over with his billie club out hitting you? That sounds like a cartoon
