Default Fhm Rip

not really a skate thread, but an interesting note from the world of mags...

in my view, general interest mags are going to continue to have difficulties...people who read FHM get a little bit of info about many things...I would say nowadays folks are more interested in the reverse (at least when it comes to print)

this not to say that general interest mags can't survive, but it will be a tough slog...your thoughts?

Emap's Laddie Title Will Continue Online

By Nat Ives

Published: December 13, 2006
NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- If you thought magazine shutdowns were over for 2006, you were wrong: Emap said this morning that it is pulling the plug on the U.S. edition of FHM.

.

"As part of the continuing review of its portfolio, Emap today announces it has decided to suspend the publication of the U.S. edition of FHM," the company said in a statement. "The decision is consistent with the group's strategy of focusing resources on faster growth platforms and has been taken in light of the difficult trading conditions in the U.S. market."

Those difficult conditions led to a raft of magazine closures this year, including Condé Nast Publications' Cargo, Time Inc.'s Teen People, American Media's Celebrity Living, Hearst Magazines' Weekend and Shop Etc. and Hachette Filipacchi Media U.S.'s ElleGirl and For Me. Like Teen People and ElleGirl, moreover, the FHM brand will continue to live online.

International editions live on
"The U.S. online site, www.FHMUS.com, which forms an important part of the brand's ongoing and increasing international presence, will continue to operate," the company said. "The decision does not affect the U.K. edition of FHM, which is the leading men's monthly magazine in its market, or the 30 international editions published under license with partners worldwide."

Calls to FHM's U.S. office were unreturned.

Ad pages at FHM from January through November fell 19.7% from the equivalent period in 2005, according to the Publishers Information Bureau. Its most recent circulation report showed a total paid and verified average of 1.25 million for the first half of 2006, down 3.2% from first-half 2005. The title was also off 6.6% at newsstands.

That mag was nothing but a wanna be playboy without nudity. It was the skinemax of magazines, along with stuff.

Maybe those general interest-type magazines are the literary equivalent to the TV remote. A magazine geared with ADD in mind. Two pages about the best DVD player is one too many... now on to the top 10 crotch rockets (could you cut it down to the top 5, maybe?). I like my mags subject-specific. Gol-durn-it, I like my porn straight up and if I want any political commentary I'll read Rolling Stone! Hey, wait a minute... didn't Rolling Stone used to be about music?

i dont read those magazines, but I have always sort of likened them to the cosmopolitans or womans day equivilent. Sounds like I made not be so far off after all. I have read thru many of my wife's magazines that had interesting and catchy articles. Upon actually reading them, it turns into a total waste of time nearly 90% of the time.

I think FHM couldn't compete with Maxim. I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did.
