Default fame, what you want is in the limo...

sad story out of New Jersey...

a world without pros, indeed....

Sometimes Fame isn’t quite what it seems
Posted February 23rd, 2007 by Bordz skate shop

Yesterday an old associate of mine wandered into my store whom I had not seen since last summer. Now, just for some background let me try to put this into prespective.

Years ago when I first decided to open a Skate shop I knew so many skaters in the area it was sick! They all came out to help but as always slowly went their own ways when they stopped getting the flow they requested from the shop. I have a team of about 14 skaters all of which just kill it. One of the tings I look for in skaters for the team is a family style approach to their attitudes, they help other skaters not put them down, abuse them, or throw them out of the way which seems to be status quo for the area we live in.

But anyway, my buddy is a kid I’ve known for awhile and has just an unreal ability in skating. I mean this kid is the best I’ve seen in the area since Tony Montgomery left. He is on Globe (Flow), and now on a Pro team I can not mention due to my carrying their products in the shop. But the last time I saw him he was clean cut, fit, and should have been a model for the team he was on, I mean he was the picture perfect skater to have on your team if you could control his temper and cocky attitude. He is good and knows it all too well. When he came in yesterday I was shocked, his eyes were sunk into his face, he looked pale, with huge black bags under his eyes. I had to ask if he was sick but he said no. He also looked dirty, ripped hoodie and baggie pants, I mean like way too baggy, not even stylish and I know about skater style I own the shop. After digging into a couple of my contacts in the industry it is apparent that he has gotten into the underground "drug" scene not the bad stuff but just way too much of it. That makes me wonder just how long he can produce at such a high level of skating when his personal appearence, and health will most likely falter after so much partying. Skateboarding can be the best thing for a kid, but for one like my buddy, it has changed him into a raging party guy who seems to have lost his way and I hope not his future in the industry as a pro skater. Don’t get me wrong I know skaters party and that’s cool, but MANY a pro has hit rehab and cleaned themselves up to become a substantial skater and contributor to the industry after suffering under the effects of the "I got famous and I wasn’t ready for it yet" ideal. South Jersey is not place to make a name for yourself in Skateboarding but I hope to help as many skaters as I can get a chance at it, the rest is up to them and God of course.

Jersey can very easily chew you up and spit you out. The majority of Jersey is actually quite nice, suburbs and even farms. But there ARE parts of Jersey you just shouldn't mess around in. Even in the suburbs you can find trouble if you're looking for it.

Sad story
