A 13-year-old boy is recovering in hospital after the handlebars of his bicycle impaled his groin in a freak accident.

The youngster, who has not been named, fell off the bicycle after clipping a kerb on Canvey Island, Essex. Paramedics called firefighters who cut away the rest of the bicycle, leaving the handlebars in his groin.
An ambulance service spokeswoman said: "The bars impaled him in the left side of his groin by about 15cm.
"It was a bit of a freak accident. We called the fire brigade who came and cut away the rest of the bike and we gave the boy some pain relief.
"He did really well, bearing in mind what happened. As soon as we got him to Southend Hospital, he was taken into theatre."
Firefighters said they could not use specialist cutting equipment because the handlebars were so deeply impaled in the youngster's inner thigh.
"Fire crews used Allen keys to unbolt the bike from the handlebars," said a spokesman.
"The handlebars remained in his leg. The boy was then taken to hospital."
