Re: "Five Reasons Why Skateboards Stink and Longboards Rock"
Shortboards can be fun. Going 30 on a longboard feels like you're only going 15. Going 15 on a shortboard feels like you're going 30. Know what I mean? Even my short boards have bigger, softer wheels though. I'm not into sliding and I like the smoother, quieter ride.

Yes, I do. When I got my Humu I noticed this going down my first hill with it, really scary but fun!

Re: "Five Reasons Why Skateboards Stink and Longboards Rock"
It finally dawned on me (dense, huh!)
These guys are simply responding to the US mainstream media that classifies any use of a board outside of what they "authorize" as longboarding. Its really a shame that these NZ'ers only see skateboarding from the moronic narrow focus of the US mainstream skateboard media and have to resort to moronic counter-arguments.
I originally thought these guys were clowns, but they are actually pawns being played by the mainstream skateboard market. Me thinks they need to quit reading the mainstream mags and vids and pick up more CW's.

Rawls, maybe you are reading a bit too much into it.
it's just a matter of terminology, for many kids these days skateboarding is synonymous with street skating.
They are just doing the usual street vs longboard argument.
It's the same street skating vs longboard argument that goes on silverfish everyday.
If you check out their site, its actually pretty well done.

"Sure, the skateboarding community at large doesn’t have any respect for longboarders, for whatever short-sighted reason, but the longboarders are probably ambivalent to the rest of us right? It’s all good, and karma bro, right? Check out Five Reasons Why Skateboards Stink and Longboards Rock over at New Zealand’s Skurfboards.com. Really? In New Zealand? Is there a big enough scene down there where they can afford to discriminate against each other? People, please try to refrain yourselves from neanderthal comments on this, either here or that site. I don’t care what size board you ride anymore than I care what shoes you prefer, unless you wear Keds™, cause then you’re a complete kook and I don’t want you reading this web site. And to think I used your photo as our 5th ever Shot of the Week, and this is how you repay me? I have no one-time email acquaintance in New Zealand, you’re dead to me! Speaking of New Zealand, you should watch Flight of the Conchords on HBO."

Re: "Five Reasons Why Skateboards Stink and Longboards Rock"
this topic brings up a point that ive been thinking about lately....
is "street skating" a misnomer or what?
where what we refer to "street" is usually done at schools (at least for me) where there are benches, tables, stairs, rails, etc...or commercial areas, where the "street" obstacles are found is usually NOT found in the street (in the literal meaning of the word).
however, longboarding usually takes place on the street....literally. maybe on the sidewalk.
street skating may quite possibly require more skill....but bombing hills is just so fun!
plus a longboard lasts way longer than a shortie that gets popped, slid, dropped, etc, so thats cool, u dont need to get a new board every so often.

Re: "Five Reasons Why Skateboards Stink and Longboards Rock"
There's tricks, there's speed, there's carving, and there's defying gravity and different boards suit different needs. It's all about the ride.
Why limit yourself to one board type?
But I have grown to like longer boards that give me more of a Snowboard stance and feel.

"school skating"---- I like it.
Speaking of school skating, most of my earliest skating was done on the smooth covered sidewalks at the local school. We would do powerslides at the sidewalk intersections. Sometimes even skating off of the benches. Then we gravitated toward ditches and homemade ramps (inclines and tranny stuff). Then the parks came and that was that. But the whole time, we still bombed hills. speed and manueverability are the stables of skateboarding. Take away the speed and you effectively lose half of the capability. Once the sole focus becomes manueverability, then the only thing left is trick trick trick. ITs the stagnation theory. It takes the basics out of the activity and morphs it into something else.

You can thank the mainstream skateboarding market for that. The NZ'ers are simply responding to the way they see skateboarding portrayed. This is what I meant by them being pawns. They are actually miles ahead of the magazines, they just dont realize it. They are skateboarding without limitations of terrain or equipment, and seeing the fun in it.

anyway. im just sick of this long vs short crap. and when you insult a shortboarder, then you are insulting half the people on this forum
It's a slippery slope (this vs. that) , and street skating is one of the hardest things to master. In the 80's, it was the BMXers vs the skaters, in the 90's it was the skaters vs. the booters, and it all adds up to a bunch of wasted time.
That's a great vid.
Here's an opinion; assume that guy in the vid has never been on a longboard. I bet he could get on one and totally rip it up. But the longboarder who sets foot on a shortboard for the first time?
I'm just saying is all
