Guapo Skateboards joins EPA pollution reduction program

Release date: 04/17/2008
Contact Information: Dave Bary or Tressa Tillman at 214-665-2200 or r6press@epa.gov

Company will cut mercury as part of National Partnership for Environmental Priorities

(Dallas, Texas - April 17, 200 Guapo Skateboards, LLC, is one of the newest companies to join the Environmental Protection Agency’s national program for reducing priority chemicals.

The Dallas-based company will replace fluorescent bulbs in its warehouse and skateboard park with low-mercury bulbs as part of the National Partnership for Environmental Priorities (NPEP).

“Each new partner that joins the effort to reduce pollution is helping create a cleaner, healthier environment,” said EPA Regional Administrator Richard E. Greene. “By joining this program, Guapo Skateboards is helping change our environment for the better, while also inspiring other companies to do the same.”

Guapo Skateboards is the first skateboard company in the country to join the NPEP program. EPA will recognize the company’s efforts to reduce pollution on April 18 during Earth Day and EarthFest 2008 activities in downtown Dallas.

“Guapo Skateboard Company is committed to reducing our environmental impact,” said Al Coker, CEO and owner of Guapo. “Our goal is to give back to the community and to enhance skate boarding’s image. We are committed to enhance our ‘green’ involvement on all levels and to promoting a safe and healthy environment. It is important to our customers and the community.”

The NPEP program promotes the voluntary reduction of 31 priority chemicals. Through work with EPA, both public and private organizations identify activities that will reduce the use of these chemicals, preventing their ability to accumulate in the environment and cause harm to humans and the ecosystem.

More than 150 organizations nationwide have joined the NPEP program, which has set a goal of reducing the use or release of four million pounds of priority chemicals by 2011.

Michael,

Looks like a brand new startup perhaps. They have a myspace page so far. Had a hard time figuring it out since the page wasn't loading for me.

Al Coker, owner and operator of the first skate shop in the city of Dallas (1977?, I think). Al has a successful real estate company here in Dallas ( Al Coker & Associates - Specializing in high-quality condominium and townhome developments for over 30 years. ). At 53, he is a lifelong skater and surfer and still going strong. Recently Al (along with several associates) tried to give the city of Dallas over $1,000,000.00 for a Grindline park. Trammel Crow, local gigantic developer, poo-poo'd every last site suggested for the park and Al grew tired of dealing with them and the city. Soooooo.....he built GUAPO! It started out as just a private, member's only skatepark but has grown into a skateboard company and community outreach. The park is located in the Cedars section of Dallas, about 2 miles south of downtown in a pretty seedy area. Since the inception, Texas Scottish Rights Hospital is on board (Jon Comer, pro skater from Dallas, pro model on Powell for years, prosthetic leg) due to Jon's relationship with them so they will be using the facility as a rehab area for patients that are skaters. Also, there is this....

20, 2008. Guapo Skateboards would like to thank Jack Matthews for kindly donating
the space for this wonderful art & community benefit.
The following day is also National Go Skateboarding Day. Go Skateboarding Day gives
passionate skateboarders and industry retailers around the globe of all colors, creeds,
and attitudes encouragement to hold skateboarding events and to celebrate the holiday.
The evening begins at 7:00 p.m. with Cocktails & Appetizers at South Side on Lamar.
Throughout the evening guests will bid on and purchase their favorite artist’s skateboard
& other auction items. South Side on Lamar will have on display 120 skateboards
designed by either a celebrity artist, a St.Philips student, a graphic designer, or a local
artist. During the evening Guapo Skateboards will present their story including the
team video and a few words from Owner Al Coker and Professional Skateboarder/
Honorary Chairman Jon Comer. Guapo Skateboards will also announce the winning
designer’s skateboard in the “Students” category of the Art Auction.
The winning student artist at St.Philips School & Community Center will receive “The
Art of Skateboarding” 2008 Award. This award includes using their artwork on a
Guapo Skateboard which will be sold in stores nationwide. The winner will receive
board royalties for each board sold, which will be set up as a college fund account.

Jon Comer is the first professional skateboarder with
"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prosthetic_limb"prosthetic limb. He is featured in the
award-winning documentary
"http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Never_Been_Done&action=editredlink "Never
Been Done". Jon earned the respect of skateboarding legends like
"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Hawk"Tony Hawk,
"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Caballero"Steve Caballero, and
"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Vallely"Mike Vallely who admire Jon’s success and
determination. Jon pushes physical boundaries to pursue his life-long dream to achieve
things that have never been done in the sport of skateboarding. His modest personality
and sense of humor help inspire those with similar disabilities. Whether a skateboarding
fan or not, his life is a truly inspirational story to people of all ages and of all walks of
life. The Texas Rite Scottish Hospital for Children of Dallas has worked closely with Jon
& his family since he was a child.
This will be a fundraising event for The Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. The
proceeds will help support the Children’s Hospital. TSRHC treats Texas children with
orthopedic conditions, such as scoliosis, clubfoot, hand disorders, hip disorders and
limb length differences, as well as certain related neurological disorders and learning
disorders, such as dyslexia.
Tickets are $25.00 each. Underwriting packages will be available from $1,000-$5,000.

Suffice to say, Al Coker is a skateboard philanthropist and a damn fine one at that. I am honored to be a keyholder of the warehouse and to be involved with Al Coker and GUAPO.
