How to do an ollie ... and other fascinating skateboarding facts
A Vans skate team member tries out the skate park.
SKATEBOARDING – the practice of riding a board with wheels and
performing tricks – has been around since the 1920s and 1930s.
It was first developed as a way of surfing on land.
The first skateboards were just roller skates nailed on to planks of wood. The steel wheels were noisy and they would not turn.
In 1972, Frank Nasworthym invented the urethane wheel. The new wheels made the boards faster and the ride smoother and softer.
A skateboard is made of maple plywood, six or seven layers thick.
A basic board is 29in, which is good for street use. Boards that are 27in are good for stunts and freestyle. Boards that are 30in are good for vertical and downhill.
The deck, wheels, and trucks are the three main parts of a skateboard.
A 2002 report by American Sports Data found that there were 18.5
million skateboarders in the world.
85% of skateboarders polled who had used a board in the last year were under the age of 18, and 74% were male.
Street skating involves riding rails, jumping steps and doing tricks on the ground.
Going to a skate park means you get to ride up and down a bowl-shaped ramp, doing tricks in the air.
An ollie is the key skateboarding trick and involves you flying forward through the air without grabbing the board.
This is the first trick to learn when skateboarding as all the other tricks are based around it.
It involves you smacking the tail of the board down really hard and then sliding your front foot up at the same time. This pops the board into the air and you land back on the board with your knees bent.
