Default any thoughts on the Maloof Cup?

it's big $$$...from the OC Register...I bolded two key items...

"People are coming to Southern California anyway – why not show them a real slice of Orange County."

In that vein, Costa Mesa, the unofficial home of O.C. skateboard culture, will get some real-deal recognition starting opening day with the Maloof Money Cup.

The three-day skateboarding tournament, which sells at an extra charge but includes fair admission, not only touts $450,000 in prize money but a who's who list of skaters including local favorite Ryan Sheckler, Shaun White and Rob Dyrdek.

Creator Joe Maloof, who co-owns the Sacramento Kings and The Palms casino, enlisted pros to design the course, which was being built with bricks and concrete earlier in the week.

"Once the Money Cup is over, the street course will be blown up, destroyed, never to be skated on again so it's a once in a lifetime adventure," Maloof said.

The Action Sports Arena will also be home to freestyle motocross and BMX events, extreme rodeo, mixed martial arts, Lucha Libre wrestling and the annual demolition derby.

George and Joe Maloof are too damn rich for their own good. They own The Palms in Vegas, The Sacramento Kings basketball team, own exclusive proprietorship rights of Coors, Miller, Corona, Heineken, Tecate, Boston Beer Company, Red Bull, and Guinness, and the Maloof company is one of the largest single shareholders of Wells Fargo Bank.

These guys are filthy, filthy, filthy rich...not that its a bad thing. I could never be that rich, i'd die way too young.

What the hell is extreme Rodeo? Isnt normal Rodeo extreme enough?

Kinda fruity; but I'd go for the cash if I was on the level.

Sheckler has a broken arm

4:05 PM, July 9, 2008
The much-ballyhooed Maloof Money Cup makes its debut Friday through Sunday at the Orange County Fair, and Ryan Sheckler, one of the star athletes, event poster boy and teen heartthrob, has said he'll compete without a cast despite the revelation this week that one of his arms is broken.
There is big money at stake in the world's richest skateboarding contest, which will pay $100,000 to the winner of the street competition alone. That's Sheckler's discipline, and the purse is a golden carrot that has lured many top street pros who do not generally compete in contests.
But Sheckler, 18, who just bought a home in a gated San Clemente community, does not need the money. Chances are, if he does compete, he'll do so because he and MTV started filming today for his third season of the popular reality show "Life of Ryan."

Can you imagine the drama? Sheckler goes down and emerges, time and again, with banged-up limb hanging limp and throbbing by his side, but presses on as teenage girls shed tears for and applaud their beloved hero?
Maybe that's not the reason, and what has gotten out regarding his injury is not the full story. But he clearly is injured and why else would he risk more extensive and possible permanent damage? Stay tuned. Sheckler is also expected to compete in an AST Dew Tour event next week in Cleveland.
