MISSION VIEJO – A 14-year-old boy who was skateboarding on the gym roof at Trabuco Hills High School fell 40-feet when he stepped on a skylight Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

The teen managed to move 40-yards across the gym floor where he landed to open a door and get help from his friends, said Orange County Sheriff's Deputy Darren Sandberg.
The boy had fractured his right wrist, ribs, pelvis, and had a bruise to his right lung.
The boy and three friends were on the roof to skateboard when the accident happened.
The teens climbed up the lifeguard tower onto a nearby roof and crossed two buildings to get to the gym. Sandberg said he has responded at least twice to the site in response to reports of skateboarding on the roof.
"It's a popular place to skateboard," Sandberg said.
The boy was taken to Mission Hospital and released to his parents. He was cited for trespassing, Sandberg said.


A YouTube search of skateboarding videos at Trabuco Hills High School shows teens doing tricks off stairways and rails. One shows a teen who stacked trashcans to retrieve his broken skateboard from the roof. The video does not describe how the board got on the roof.

Based on the comments, it sounds like Mission Viejo is a real friendly place to live.

I imagine there will be loads of serious backlash to local skateboarders for this. The very least of which will be making the gym roof unsk8able. Some gravel or goopy tar ought to do it. Just the school's luck, the extra weight of the gravel or whatever will make the roof collapse.

Ouch. I remember when I was in elementary school two kids climbed up on the roof and were trying to jump over the skylights that were over my classroom. It was in the morning before school started, but one of them didn't make it and crashed through. He didn't fall 40 feet, it was more like ten but he landed on a desk and was hurt real bad, it was on the news and everything. There was still a big mess of glass and stuff and we had gym class all morning while they cleaned it up. I haven't thought about that in years.
