So I recently discovered that Jason Lee of My Name Is Earl used to be a professional skater.

My friend lent me a copy of Mall Rats. I believe this was his first movie. He was hilarious, one of my favorite actors now. So I looked him up and found a bio. I read about him and his skate career.

Check out this video

I'll do more research later on.

Also, I don't care if you already know. This is for those who DONT know.

yes, this is old news if you follow street skating...

but young kids need to learn about their past...
old guys too, many old guys don't know any early street history.

that video is from the famous Blind "Video Days". 91?
right around when US invade Iraq for the first time...
and George Sr was in power,

Jason Lee is rad. Check out some of the other Kevin Smith movies he's been in. Trust me, they're GOOD.

My friend is a huge Kevin Smith fan, he's lending me all of his movies 1 by 1. I've already seen most of them (Clerks, Clerks 2, Dogma, Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back)

He also was in a movie called "Mumford." He plays an eccentric billionaire, if I remember correctly. He actually does a bit of skating in the movie--part of the eccentricity, I suppose.

Not only was he a pro, he was "the hot pro" for a while - early 90's. Everyone knew Jason Lee - everyone wanted his deck - the equivalent of a Chris Haslam today, maybe.

(the early 90's were a fun time IMO - huge homeless pants that made your feet disappear, tiny wheels on the order of 35mm, and the most complex flippy-trick and 5-changeup-grinds-on-a-single-curb technical skating that the world has ever known.
And that might even include Mullen vs. Song round 1, 2, or 3.
In fact, Almost Cheese and Crackers made me think entirely of the technical mini-ramp skating in videos like H-Street's Lick...

Pick up the movie "The Man Who Souled The World" - documentary type story about Steve Rocco and the World Industries empire. They interview Jason Lee throughout it, since he rode for Blind for a while in the 90's.

And Jason Lee or no - My Name Is Earl is the greatest show on television. Doesn't hurt that Jaime Pressly is in it either...

early 90's still had slappy's to, change up grinds were soo much fun. How many tricks (in a row) can you do from a slappy start?

That makes me think...
How can I burn my VHS vids from the 80's and 90's to my PC?
Can I create an AVI or WMV?
I should upload them to YouTube or something... those vids rock, especially since all that kind of skating is coming back, with the technical mini-ramp stuff, no-comply tricks, pressure-flips and all that kind of stuff.
It rocks that I can just pull those out of my back pocket like I've been doing them for 15 years when kids are just learning them at the park...

I never had a long enough curb... kind of challenging on a single waxed parking block!
I could do boardslides to backward nose grinds with a revert back to forward, that was probably the most complex. but on a long rail, I could do boardslide-to-feeble-to-boardslide-to-feeble back and forth liike it was silly (well it is). And bluntslide to boardslides really aren't anything impressive, or bluntslides to grinds, but it was pretty tricky on a single parking block... the grind was more of a "chink",
Ah, the 90s... it was the mini ramp combo tricks that I got into. I could stay on that lip all day!

Mission Beach across the street from Hamels used to have amazing curbs (50feet) that attracted all manner of skaters. You'd see 20-30 people linned up to skate from left to right and then from right to left fast fast painted curbs (before wax) you had to push hard slappy and then start you change ups 50-50/5-0/Smith/5-0/Febble/revert off or some variation was my stock grind front or backside...I had a bunch of nose grinds variations but those were never as fast or clean. Sadly those curbs aren't in the condition to support that kind of skating nor does the scene have the following that it once did. BITD most visiting somebody's came to skate the curbs with the local rats until all hours of the night. I met a lot of pro's there and watched and did a lot of fun skating on those curbs.

a) skateboarding
b) the movies and/or televsion

Jason has done BOTH...quite an astonishing feat..
