When I was in Cali for my birthday in '06. the LCB put on a great race at Pump Station, the ASR show was happening and just about EVERYBODY you've ever heard of in '70s skateboarding comes to the race. Hell, I saw this big oriental-looking dude with a couple of gorgeous blonde chicks and I asked Dave Hackett, "who is that?" Dave looks up and says, "Jeff Ho."

So, after the race and some revelry at the Chili's at the top of the hill, I somehow got hooked up with Brent Kosick, Tiger Williams and Rick Howell. (Well, I know how I got hooked up with Rick: I was staying at his house and he was driving.) Anyway, it was late in Encinitas and Rick and I decided to crash at Tiger's before heading back to L.A. the next morning. (The next day was Sunday and that's also a tale for another time.)

Anyway, Tiger and Kosick wanted beer and chips and Slim Jims and Combos and and and . . . well, it's about 11:30 at night and we stop at this convenience store. (We may have been in Leucadia. I didn't know where the hell I was except I could see the surf breaking in the streelights at the end of the block.) Tiger and Brent go in, and then Tiger comes out and waves for us to follow him around the store. We get out and walk over to him.

"OK, this little apartment complex here is where Kim Cespedes lives. Let's go over and see if she wants to hang out with us."

I was stoked. I mean, it was KIM CESPEDES. Then my better nature took hold, "Tiger, it's almost midnight and you wanna go banging on some girl's door with KOSICK? C'mon, if I cashed in every CD I owned I still couldn't raise our bail!"

So, I came close. If only it was an hour earlier.
