What are you using to paint this? I'm and arsits, and I use acrylics. Titanium white acrylic paint is very opaque (ie *not see though). Most white paints are quite opaque because the pigment particles are larger and more abundant, so painting the white last should work just fine. If you are using acrylics, use Titanium White, and stay away from zinc white.
Also, if you go with acrylics, PM me and I'll give you some tips on how to get a super clean line when taping (I've done it a few times
