I had a spud for a while, and it was my first low board(my other board was a topmount), but I had no problem adjusting to it. I think I am just more of a fan of lower boards though. the problem I did have with it is that the standing platform is quite small and I found it uncomfortable. I have a wider stance though and ended up getting a demonseed to replace it (huge standing platform). It would feel noticable smaller than a trylam I think.
I would deffinately recommend a lower board though because they feel stable and make pushing a lot easier. I would just recommend something a little longer. also, if you are afraid of the feeling of a spud because it is really low, you might want to try a drop through, which is closer to the height of a topmount, and they tend to have more foot room for their length. ex - rayne hustler and hellcat, LY dropspeed, dervish, insect mosquito, subsonic barrage, kebbek hairpin, etc.
