They both rock, but behave different. The Otangs are more icy and doesn't slow you down much at all, the 81a freerides are much smoother and slows you down more. The freerides also wear way faster than the Otangs.

is that because of the difference in the duro? i mean 81a vs 86a can wear totally differently.

I really like being able to post answers to questions and keep the thread open but if gets too out of hand I might have to resort to the locked thread.

Speaking of wheels, those centrax that you guys have been promising will be available "soon" for almost a year now. Are those actually legit, or was it just a publicity stunt?

Sorry to put you on the spot and all, but after a year of claims, I'd like a straight answer.
Rolling on fly's on one of my setups, and bigzigs on the other, always a die-hard abec11 fan.

The first generation of centrax were hand-made very limited edition wheels that started sprouting out around Spring/Summer 2009. Mischo Erban, Martin Siegrist and a couple other Abec 11 Team Riders were able to get their hands on this limited stock item and test them out. After a season full of wins on these prototypes there was a lot of stoke coming off of them and Abec 11 was looking at making the final molds of the wheels to release a full production run around Fall 2009. Unfortunately, the molds came out completely wrong and we had to delay the entire wheel release.

B) Here's how it works. I create a wheel, design it in Solidworks, and have (usually 4) prototype molds made. I make a small batch of prototype wheels from these molds in several different formulas and/or duros. Other skaters and I test the wheels and then make any necessary changes to the prototype molds. We re-test the latest wheels until we have a winner. We then make an entire production set of molds (this often exceeds 100 molds) in order to make production runs.

We never made a production run with the bad molds. Those white wheels were samples that demonstrated that we had an issue with every one of the production molds (my wallet says "ouch"). All of the green, lime, and lemon wheels that Mischo, Scoot, and I have been riding are from the 4 prototype molds. It's very expensive to hand pour wheels from such a small number of molds. It's also very expensive to make a production set of molds, and it's very expensive to have to re-do it, but I have to do what I have to do to get them out there and to get it right.

C) For now the Centrax are big race wheels and no 70mm version is planned, but I do have a limited number of Reflex Formula Grippins and they totally rock. Perhaps limited quantities could be leaked into the universe to kind souls if it was kept off of the radar ...

Hey Everyone, I haven't been here in a while and I'll probably have to read about 20 pages to get current. I do want to mention however that we are getting somewhat closer to the release of the 77mm Centrax wheels. My recent silence on the subject stems from the fact that I THOUGHT we had our production molds ready to make our first run of wheels, but in fact what I had was molds that produced out of round wheels with flash issues as well. Those of you who have experience in outsourcing the production of metal parts know that drawings are made, tolerances are given, and when the resulting parts don't match the spec the vendor has to eat the bad parts and make new ones on his dime. That is, of course, if the vendor accepts that the parts aren't to spec. In any event, after waaaaaay too much time and waaaaaaaaay too much energy and waaaaaaay too much money, new molds are completed and all tests indicate that we now have perfectly concentric molds. Sample wheels are being poured and tested this week. That puts us at about one month away from them being available to the public.

I apologize for the ongoing delays with these wheels (and other products) and will be working hard to get as much as I can done during the off season.

p.s. Congrats go to Mischo Erban for becoming the 2009 IGSA World Cup winner and fastest Downhill Skateboarder on the planet. All of his victories were won on Centrax wheels, Biltin Bearings, Fyre Trucks, and Reflex Bushings. Mischo was clocked at 70.23mph beating the Guiness World Record holder on the same track and against the fastest racers out there.
