well...i would love to get into some sliding...definately downhill cos i live in cape town and we have some sick hill here!and some freestyle stuff...like i would like to get into most of the styles though...i know its gonna require a few different boards in my quiver and thats kwl...i think for now though i would really like to get into some sliding and freestyle!
i was thinking of getting something like the loaded dervish with some randal trucks, retro wheels and bones reds dearings?u think that that would be a gud setup for wat i want to do?

Re: I'm a noob in cape town that needs some help!
everyone wants to rock a dervish as their first board. the dervish will have your freestyle and comuting(ish) covered but if you want to go downhill hard, the dervish is no bueno. itll help you learn tho for sure and by then you can get more boards and all. find something other than retro wheels like gumballs or bigzigs.

Get a helmet and some elbow and knee pads. I grabbed some used roller-hockey elbow pads to save my elbow skin in long slides. Get some slider gloves and learn to slide stop. All these are discussed in the forums here on the Fish. Then go for it!
I hope your hills are as good as your waves!

Re: I'm a noob in cape town that needs some help!
ive never ridden a dervish before. but from what i have hear, you cant go wrong with that board as far as an all around board. you can dance, do tricks, carve, pump. the only thing you cant really do is bomb hills. but ride them out with carves and you would be fine. what is the top speed on a dervish before speed wobbles?

there is no any set top speed on any board before you get wobbles, it's all based on the rider's skill.
I've taken my flex 2 dervish up to 40 before getting wobbles and I could ride it out just fine

Re: I'm a noob in cape town that needs some help!
you have a point. i guess i mean, how stable is it. b/c skill plays a big role in speedboarding, but i really doubt a pro bomber would take a loaded dervish at 75 mph down hill. just b/c with all the skill in the world, your gunna eat dirt.

I wouldn't take it over 35 on a regular basis if that's what you're asking.
It's fun for freeride, but I really wish I had a kebbek hairpin for that.
oh well

It's a solid board. It's an 07' and it's been thrashed and it still bombs any hill I want it to.
it's kinda low with the 42* randals, so I've been considering either putting my bears back on it, or getting 85mm bigvents.
all in all, it gets the job done

Re: I'm a noob in cape town that needs some help!
hey noobie bra.
Depends on how much cash you have. there are two guys in the city that makes proper decks. Kent Lingeveld(Alpha longboards) makes some sick-ass carving beasts. Justin Boast(Project Speedboards) makes a solid drop-trough speed deck for R650. Go for Randalls and any cheap bearings(reds). As far as the wheels go, the best would be a soft and a hard set. Personally i would go for a hard set and learn to slide them until they are triangles..
And the Project is one of the most popular downhill decks around. Rather stay away from expensive international #### and support the local scene. And its also good advice not to go for a sector 9, as one's skill tends to progress qiuckly in the beginning, after which you would want something better.
Alpha and Project both have their own websites so go check them out. Corner Surfshop in Muizenberg sells some nice longboarding gear. And the Surf Centre in Canal Walk. And check out Sagra.co.za site for SA downhill news.
Pads are good, but a thick denim pant and some gloves will sort you out. Check Boogaloos in Canal Walk for pads and Gumtree for second hand leathers. There are people in Worcester(Mad Max or something) that makes a nice fibreglass motocross helmet for under a grand, which is perfect for a beginner.
Good luck and happy skating
Drop a post if you need a skating buddy. Im also a beginner, started december 2008.

I order my stuff from Daddie in the States: the selection here in Cape Town is too limited and it's cheaper to get it from overseas!!
For example: 1 Randal truck costs R350 at the Corner....for 2 trucks i paid R450 and it got here in 2 weeks!!
I've ordered a week ago a Loaded Vanguard....and i'm sitting here biting my nails!
-
Re: I'm a noob in cape town that needs some help!
I also order stuff from Daddies Board Shop in the states, it works out cheaper, but can be a hassle with customs on our side, taking at least 2 weeks for them to process ####, sometimes much longer... Granted there is a much bigger selection, but for your first board, you prob wont need the selection or the hassle, and prob just want to start skating.
I spoke to the owner of Corner Surf, and he is bringing Original boards, plus a pile of new sector 9's and some Otangs, siek vibes! And he reckons he will be able to give older sector 9s away for up to 30% off, so ja bru, pull in there, they stock all the necessary and its always good to support the local shops and manufactures and shite cus if there is a demand then prices will go down. They also stock some Project Speed boards. Awesome.
Also check gumtree, search skateboard longboard etc, and find some quality gear second hand. Definitley the cheapest way to get a setup going.
And if you handy, build a board, not too hard as long as you have a jigssaw handy/ know someone...
Most importantly, wear a helmet, always. Please. (oh ja, and gloves and knee pads for your own sake)
aweeee!
edit: but ja get yourself a set of Randals, whatever you do. They are pretty much the standard truck, they last forever, and they pretty much the first and last truck you'll ever need. But do not disregard the sector 9's. They are epic first boards, and the decks are sweet, the wheels can be replaced and upgraded with some legit wheels once you'v slid the crap out the original set. I can recomend the bomb hills board, even just for the sweet as deck. But as a setup, itll be killer for your learning days and faaar beyond.
edit no 2: shiit alocin dude that was a serious post dredge! haha the dude is probably ripping it up by now, and Iv just dumped that huge pile of info on a dead thread! haha oh well, ari vibes ekse

Your infos will be handy to some other capetonian!!
as for the import duties i have a small trick for you: if you ask at Daddies to declare a smaller value for your purchase (they've declared 40$ for my vanguard) custom won't stop it.
just ordered a pair of fallen shoes and they got in no problem
cheers
