Hey there
Can anyone direct me to a source that i can buy really good quality maple from? I am living in South Africa and its awfully hard to find a supplier that can provide me with veneer that is 1/16" thick in both a horizontal and vertical grain, suppliers here only seem to do one or the other, which doesn't really help me at all!
Does anyone know where i can maybe get maple from then?
I can get maple from Canada but you have to order 2000 square meters of wood or something ridiculous like that...and i am not that serious yet. If anyone could help at all that would be amazing. Or even if u could give me an alternate option for wood?
Thanx Duders!

Yo dude,
Did you have any luck? I can´t find Baltic Birch at all, I could get maple from PG Bison, but it was tre´ expensive! What maple have you found and how much?
Just made a drop etc board with pine ply and its a bit kak to say the least...
Where does Justin Boast get his maple? For the price I was quoted from PG bison, I would end up with a board costing R800++ roughly. Would rather pay that for one of his boards hint hint nudge nudge
You have access to all kids of exotic woods that would rock for building skateboard. Maple is the generic wood. Look into vertical lamination.

There is no consumer demand for the type of maple veneer you are looking for in South Africa. No body uses it so no wood trading companies will bring it in. Plus going to a wood company and asking them to import means they will have to import in large quantities which costs a lot of money and they will need to make their money back. So if you just want to make a few boards it won't be viable for a company to spend that much money on wood that will sit there. And if you are thinking on large quantities then why go through a wood company, instead do it yourself.
When I started out I used anything I could get my hands on. Plus jumping into maple when you have never built a board before can be costly...there is a lot of trial and error before you get it right. I would recommend using what ever you can get, perfect you board building and then take it from there.

Thanks for the reply, I guess it makes sense that they wouldn´t import it...
Do you import large quantities and then make "project speedboard" boards here in SA?
I´m kinda getting the building down, been doing it for a while but I´m pretty frustrated with not getting wood that will bend!
You could probably supply the small demand for skateboard maple in South Africa with the wood you dont use...? Would be tight
Anyway it´s chilled, I just do it for the hell of it!
But ja I also need to get back into some proper skating, Iv been on a bit of a hiatus for a year or 3
