Amphibious longboards?
Someone mentioned hamboards. I'd think you would need to waterproof those bearings or build in electronic truck lift compartments.
It'd be the coolest sport... "Dude, don't go down that hill. It'll end at the ocean!!" "Ocean smotion!!! Watch this!" So the longboarder blasts down the hill at 50 MPH. As soon as he shoots off the seacliff, he'll electronically active the truck lifts.

And drowns?
Where would the trucks go?
Electronic systems small and light enough to be on a board would be far too slow. Might need some kinda mechanical system.
AWESOME idea though.

and dies on impact from whiplash? 50 mph + water = death.
I think what you'd have to do is just make the trucks very angular (hydrodynamic) and wide, like hydro-foil type ####. THAT would be awsome.

Re: Amphibious longboards?
Hmmm. I'd think the board would continue on the water like a speed boat. I don't have any experience with water based sports though (cept swimming).

Re: Amphibious longboards?
I'd meant a mechanical system. You'd have to cut-out compartments under the board. Yes one thick ass board!

Those compartments better be sealed, because anything other than a perfectly smooth underside would create drag. LOTS of drag.

Re: Amphibious longboards?
or just take the wheels and trucks off, but to make it float make the board out of High density foam. and to steer use fins in the back!
And besides boat ramps where the #### would you use it?

Re: Amphibious longboards?
Lakes with hills:
Lake Vasona is a great example. It has a couple paved hill paths that happen to be steep but short. Maybe not fast enough but if you can't make a tight carve, you'll end up in the lake!
Sea cliffs:
We aren't talking those with a steep fall to the water.
Oceanside communities:
A steep neighborhood street hopefully lacking a guard rail at the bottom. Even if it has one, place a skateramp at the bottom.
Your suggestion:
It'd basically turn into a surfboard. How would you send it down a hill?
To the dude who mentioned sealed truck compartments; absolutely, like the airline jets do.

1. You would enter the water at speed going sideways, ill give you one hundred dollars if you could land that.
2. Are you joking?
3. Possible, if the conditions were perfect and you could early grab really well
4. That was the point. It was a joke

Oops, missed your post frankie18, but exactly.

Re: Amphibious longboards?
maybe the wheels could be adjusted to point backwards, and then the inner wall (think flywheels) could be miniature rudders?

Re: Amphibious longboards?
ASSuming an amphibious longboard could be made, it'd probably be wise to make it motorized. That way you don't need a hill. You could do neato leeto things like running it across a swimming pool, impressing all the chicks in bikinis. Add a little dance and yer set!

Re: Amphibious longboards?
Have the top of the skateboard be the bottom of the surfboard.. and do half a kickflip off the ramp into the water.
On the motorized angle, maybe get towed by a hovercraft?.. too bad there's no skateboard wheels that work well on sand..
