That depends. An iPod is both an MP3 player AND a storage device. If the music is saved under the MP3 player, then the answer is no, you can't. When you store information on the external hard drive (drag and drop things onto your iPod icon on your desktop), you can. There's also a hack you can perform to get songs off the MP3 player. Look it up, but it might void the warranty.

Are you opening up your ipod desktop icon, or are you opening it up through iTunes? You are not supposed to see your library when you open up the desktop icon...

when you open it like that the files are all hidden in some way so you don't see them. The itunes program seems them and so it sees the music. there is a way to rip the files off the ipod but it will still only open in itunes. usefull to expand your library, but not much else. and songs that were downloaded from itunes originally have a signature that itunes will recognize and will not allow you to play that file. i forget how to rip em right now cause it doesnt seem to have much benefit to it, but it can be done.

This will work, but you need to burn the files as audio files, not MP3. That should remove the iTunes copyright protection. I was reading a magazine once showing a program that automates this-- just throw in a CD, run the program and it will automatically burn then rip files while keeping stuff organized. Shame that I can't remember the name of the program...anyone know what I'm talking about? (The article was in Maximum PC)
