actually, i picked up longboarding because it reminds me of surfing a longboard (surfboard).
very similar, IMO. the only thing is padle can be a major pain for n00bs. but once you stand up and you learn how to turn and pump, feels just like carving on concrete.
mainly why i picked up longboaridng is because im moving to TN, where the waves of cement are endless.
you really need surfing in your life

Re: Anyone surf?
I have a flexdex fatdaddy set up with rll's and sabre F/X type bushings front and back and it turns just like a big single fin, helps me keep the stoke out here in San Antonio since the closest surf is 3 hours away. I miss san diego.
Hills are definitely easier to catch than waves, although the vast majority of wipeouts you take surfing won't have much detriment to your body like skating will haha.

Re: Anyone surf?
I've not surfed in YEARS and I'm not very good at it, but I'll be damned if I didn't love it.

surfing and skating are not comparable at all.
That being said, surfing is super fun and awesome, though I've kind've gotten used to the convenience of skating (don't have to wait for/share waves)

Re: Anyone surf?
Surfing and skating to me are distant cousins of the same family. They are definetly related, but look, feel, and act differently. Surf culture (at least with shorties) is 10x worse than shortboard culture IMO. It sucks. Which is why i longboard all by myself. But, no matter what, it is very difficult to have a bad day surfing. The ocean and the energy and life it has is amazing.
I had the best summer with my two favorite longboards (street & surf) this summer...found a similar, way more secluded/sea cliff version of crass' cove (in a state park, kicked ASS!) that no one could find/knew about/cared about...waves were alll mine, wild life all around, and there were hills-a-plenty all around. Yeaaaah boy.
Longboard skating = longboard surfing > shortboard surfing >shortboard skating.

Re: Anyone surf?
I had an experience like that once surfing in Monterey, CA. Normally it's a rough time surfing there. It's not too far from santa cruz and it's much colder, closed out more often, and has some really weird currents. But I could only ever make it to SC on the weekends and I'd be damned if I wasn't gonna get in the water if the surf was at least rideable.
There was this was day with what the buoys showed to be a micro swell, like 2 ft, but it was oriented in just such a way that the normally average beach break turned into the best damn longboard wave I've ever surfed.
I was normally the only guy out there in the 4:00-5:00 pm range because the sun was going down by that time. But on that day there were like 15 people out there, I didn't even know there were 15 people in monterey who surfed lol. Everybody was cool, it was bright and golden as the sun was setting behind the mountains on the peninsula, the currents were non-existent and for once the water didn't seem so cold.
We were all chilling, not much needs to be said when you're surrounded by that kind of natural beauty and it happened. Maybe 15 yards past the lineup a gray whale came up for some air. Easily one of the most memorable days of my life, and the surf session only lasted a little over an hour. It's an amazing thing.
