A simple trick to help beat the heat

I learned this method for keeping the house cool from my dad who spent time in Texas with the army as a radio man out in the tumbleweeds setting up remote stations. You have to be careful about finding shade out there, because a rattlesnake has probably already found it.

Anyway, this tip will keep your house MUCH cooler during the day. Dad was pretty picky about it but I do it all the time now. I like to have my windows open all night so I can sleep. But here's the trick. In the morning, get up and CLOSE all the windows and trap all the cool air INSIDE. It will take a lot longer to heat the house back up. I usually just open the place up when I get home from work.

And for you lucky bastahds with A/C and swimming pools - carry on.

Crap! I forgot to mention a CRITICAL element to the above formula. And this is the part that made Dad seem kind of weird. You also have to close all the shades on the windows to block out the rays.

So, close all windows and pull all shades down. This will utilize the home's insulative properties the same way it keeps your heat inside when it's cold outside.

So yes, pulling all the shades down and playing Xbox for half a day in a stinky dark mancave is another effective method for beating the heat.

This. AND, if you can avoid using electricity, that helps. So turn off lights if possible, etc.

Sometimes I run to the basement and hang out there for awhile. I can't do that all the time, so I usually use an ice pack, take a quick cool shower, eat freezies or watermelon!

Basements are amazing, but again some people don't have them. I had a house with a finished basement, and it was easily 20 degrees cooler down there than upstairs. 90 deg upstairs worked out to a comfy 70 downstairs. And no, it wasn't a dank, spidered out basement. It was a finished home theatre with 50 inch screen. Air conditioning costs? NONE. Perfect hideout for HOT afternoons/evenings.



Some of my friends would come over and watch that big screen on hot days just to escape their hot homes. I still have a basement in this house, and it's cool down there, but it's a plain, dank basement....

Here's how I destroy heat when I'm trying to sleep on a HSN. (hot summer night)

1. Windows OPEN
2, Covers OFF
3. Put a wet handtowel flat inside the freezer. Lay this on your face if on your back, or have someone slap it on your back if you like to lay face down. Then turn on a fan. The fan will speed up the evaporation of the water, which feels cooler than just air on dry skin.

It's supposed to get to 93 here today.

Haha HELL no. It's been so hot lately that I've been sneaking into work and sitting in the walk-in freezer. My friend has a pontoon boat though, so that's always a nice way to cool off.
