Re: Deadly Pet Food Recall
Interesting thing about this is seeing all the affected brands...label kills...kitty.
Not making light of it mind you. That's the sort of thing that can make you eternally paranoid.
You better believe I checked that website first time I heard it on the news. And scoured just to
be sure. I don't care if they say it's just the wet food, I wanted to make sure we weren't using their
kibble either. No chances man.
I'm just glad that we don't use that Eukanuba or Science Diet stuff--only suitable for
outdoors dogs--in other words...it gives them heinous gas.

Re: Deadly Pet Food Recall
because of this incident, people also found out that the expensive premium food they'd been paying for is in fact the exact same as the cheaper stuff. same ingredients, same factory. just price point marketing.
guess who makes safeway brand soup? campbells. same ingredients, same factory.
in germany, all the taxis are mercedes.
perceived quality is an interesting thing.

Re: Deadly Pet Food Recall
I hadn't really been paying attention to this because Kittens has been eating the same food all her life and has been fine (her food isn't one of the contaminated ones). I couldn't imagine being one of the people who lost their pet.

Re: Deadly Pet Food Recall
Scary stuff for people that feed their pets moist/wet pet foods! Cool of you to post it, Mrs. Samhell, just to ensure more people could find out.
To reward you, I think Mr.Samhell should give you the night off to take a sudsy bath and listen to that music you like, while he's out doing something productive...say between the hours of 9 and midnight, tonight, with the 'fish skaters at Banana Bay. You deserve it! 8)

Re: Deadly Pet Food Recall
More likely just poor quality control--but will probably have an impact of import of Chinese wheat.

Re: Deadly Pet Food Recall
Rat poison = poor quality control?? I would've thought poor quality control is when you get bits n pieces of dirt and pebbles or too much salt into one tub of mix. But rat poison?

Re: Deadly Pet Food Recall
Honestly, this is pathetic, and, as a pet owner (two cats and a dog), I'm pissed. My understanding is the contaiminated wheat-gluten was imported from China, where it is legal to use this poison. We don't have wheat supplies in the US?? Perhaps I'm being somewhat conspiratorial but Menu Foods stated they changed vendors back in December. What was the impetus for this? Where was the original supplier located? Is this simply another example of US companies going overseas to slash costs? I hope to see class action lawsuits so Menu Foods is hit where it counts....in their stock prices! Sorry to vent, but my pets are beloved family members and, as such, this is unforgivable! Where's the quality control here?

I'm a pet owner too and I would be pissed as hell over this if it had affected my pet. Hell, I'm pissed just reading about how it's affected other people's pets. But yes, of course it's a cost-cutting measure, there would be no other reason to import the wheat from China otherwise.

Its everything, as of now there is a total of 91 brands effected. This recall has showed us one thing, spending money for the high-end stuff does not meen its safe. It effected Nutro, Iams, Eukanuba to name a few. We have come to find out that almost ALL pet food comes from the same place, it just has a different lable. Please go to the Menu Foods site for a complete list.
http://www.menufoods.com/recall/
Sadly it is food that was sold in stores like Pet Smart, Kroger, Safeway, Vons, a lot of pet stores. You name it, if a store sold pet food they were most likely effected. That is what make it so scary , at this point any food could be tainted. I have taken our cat Monkey off ALL wet food. She is getting human tuna untill wet food becomes safe again. Even then I don't know if I will ever trust it.
I see you are in Australia, I don't know if the food has reached you or not. From the forum I am on for cats people in Germany said some of the food there has been effected and pulled. The best thing to do is check the list and if your food is on it, take it back to the store or toss it out, just DO NOT feed it to your animal untill you know for sure. I will go and find out if you guys have been effected, I'll let you know.
Cheers

Re: Deadly Pet Food Recall
It hasn't been big news in Australia, I assume it hasn't hit us here. But I don't feed my dogs pet food anyway. There have been many pet food scares here about having too many preservatives and containing nothing but crap leftovers off the floor of the butchery. The vets here all recommend feeding your pets proper human food and that's what my dogs have been getting in the past year (particularly after a health scare for one of my dogs, he's an old one now, about 15yo so it's more important for him).
