Default Dorm or a Modern Cabana?

I'm going to college next year and it's like 20 minutes from my house with no traffic. I was looking into housing and stuff and I found a different option.. something I've never even heard of before. It's a whole lot cheaper than a dorm and it's pretty cool. Basically It'd be like my own house in my parents backyard.

    MODERN CABANA

    Check out the gallery.

Anyway my question is which should I do? I really want to dorm but money is real tight for me right now, even after loans and stuff.

If your parents are footing the bill for your tuition this would save them big $ in your living expenses. Food, rent laundry, cable and phone/internet adds up. They would also have a guest house or craft room after your graduate. If you get along great w/ your parents and don't mind them knowing almost every move you make, this could be a practical idea.

When I was in college I really needed the distance from home, the further the better.

I get along with my parents surprisingly well. I understand buck. The dorm experience is a must. But this would be after the first year of dorming.

I'm commuting from home first semester and dorming for the rest of that year. This would happen during my sophomore year.

agreed, I really havent seen many kids at my school that have a lot of friends on campus because they live it at home. You miss about 1/2 of the college experience if you live off campus, your pretty much out of the loop.

Just get an apartment or house with a friend. It's usually cheaper than a dorm, and you avoid the whole living in a jail cell thing. Dorms are teh suck.

Dude, you live 20 minutes away. Commute to school and save loads of money. Even if your folks have to chip in some cash for a beater to help you get to school you're still saving money for your folks or (if you're taking out loans) yourself.

Buy a Cabana, and put it in your dorm.

get an apartment, living in a dorm is way over rated. you get the freedom and don't have to deal w/ any of the bs which comes along w/ dorm life. (RA's, guest checkin's, supervision in general)

You need to experience dorm life....I made the mistake of not getting in on that my first year, and man did it blow. Having said this, that Cabana thing is pretty cool, but I don't know if I'd put it in my parents back yard. The whole point is to be removed from your home.

i live 20 minutes away from my parents house by school. At my school, if you didnt live in the dorms or join the greek system you made no friends in class (its a big school). My dorm experience was the best times of my life. i lived in teh dorms for three years because my parents only gave me the option of living at home or living the dorms (i wasnt allowed to move out into an apartment or house). id say dorm it this year fo sho. and then save up money again and get one of those cool lookin cabanas. thats crazy cool!!

I vote dorms. It exposes you to so many people, and also teaches you how to interact with others and experience 'less than optimal' situations.

When I arrived, I found out I was suitemates with the RA (shared a bathroom between us), and I thought it would suck. Turns out I got one of the 3 or so clutch RAs so we never got in trouble for anything.

I don't have the dorm option at this time in my life.
But, I totally want one of those cabana things.
Maybe, my own little cabana complex. Cabana bedroom, cabana bathroom, cabana kitchen, cabana office.
The bottom line, I just really want my own space.

If you go to pricing on that site then you can see that a 10x12 cabana with standard everything costs about $10,000 without shipping, instillation, tax or foundations. That's the same price as a year in the Dorms but in the Dorms you get food and utilities. In the house you get just living space, no food, utilities, etc, for the same price.

I would say do what you are planning... (commute first semester, dorms second semester) then get an appartment with cool people you met or live in the dorms again for your sophomore year.

I don't think paying ten grand to get your bedroom moved outside is a good choice.

Also, what college are you going to? I am guessing either SFSU or SJSU... and I am going to SFSU so hopefully there, eh?

I say try out dorm life. I'm in my second year at SFSU and I've only ever lived off campus. I regret not trying it out for the experience if nothing else.
