A medium-format camera is not what he needs for a beginner in photography and just because you buy a good camera doesn't mean that you will automatically get good pics.
I would recommend the d40 if you're trying to stay under 500, or you could wait for about a month and pick up the Canon Digital Rebel XS which will be in about the same price range.
true, but if you take a little time to learn to make nice pics, a good setup will last you a lifetime
I just bought a D60 that should be coming in any day now, decent set-up for 650$..

props to alademuerte... i just got a d60 and i freakin LOVE IT. two of my best friends dabble in photography and started with d40's and absolutely loved em. just because its not the best nikon doesnt mean its a bad starter camera. its really awesome

If you look, there are some great deals to be had on used bodies. I have seen 30D's selling in your price range, just because people want to upgrade. I have a couple of 30D's but I am not sure if I want to part with one yet.
Damn batteries, gotta let them charge first before using it...
