Unhappy My New Car (A Sad Story)

My sister were sharing a 99' Ford Explorer, It had been through a wreck, driven across the country with us, and it started to fall apart. We looked and looked for a truck. I don't know why but my dad decided on a 99' Ford Ranger.
It smelled funny but beyond that it was great! Then the overdrive light started to flash and it (an auto) started to shift really roughly. We decide it needed its transmission fluid changed but then it gets really bad. We take it into the shop and they say they need to take apart the transmission. Next day we find out that the Transmission needs to be rebuilt. AND it will cost more than the cars worth.
So, of course we don't have them fix it and let them know we'll come pick up the car. Then the guys say even though our car is now practically scrap, we still them owe them a couple hundred to put it all back together.

That era of Explorers weren't known as "Exploders" for nothing. Truly sry to hear of the delima, check out junkyards for totalled Explorers with transmissions that are working.. Best way to go in this situation

Sorry, I guess I didn't make it clear,
We sold the explorer (which we nicknamed the exploder) and bought a new truck. We bought a 99' Ford Ranger. The problems happened to the Ranger.

So now we are going to try and sell the Ranger and buy a new truck. Hopefully a manual Toyota or Nissan.

So new being less than 10 years old? Get yourself a fullsize American truck. It will last for ever. I have blown up toyotas and nissans in the past myself, but cannot complain about my fullsize trucks.

We already rebuilt the transmission on the Explorer, and now we are in the same position with the ranger.
We are not buying a full size american truck.
    1. because, as you can see, we haven't had good experience with american cars so far
    2. the only "fullsize American truck" you can buy around here is one of these:

I was going to ask why in the world would you think American cars are the best, but right then I read that you are from Texas.

damn, two transmission problem in a row.... that sucks....
how much did they want for the repair?
    miles on the ranger?

so, how about the used transmission option that was suggested?

years ago, i had transmission problem with my awd subaru impreza,
paid buttloads of money.... ( i was young and dumb, looking back, should have gave up on that car...)

American automobiles suck so terribly it is not even funny. In the 90s automobiles manufactured in the United States were built so that they would have to be replaced after a year, Japanese cars such as Toyotas (I have a 1999 Landcruiser) are ###### amazing and so durable. My Landcruiser has not ever broken down and has only had problems with the speakers every once in a while. I will never buy an American made car/truck.

That is simply not true. I have driven trucks since the 90's everyone was rock solid durable.
Oh yeah, the Japanese do not make anything larger than a half ton. There is nothing like a diesel to pull a trailer with.

    hard to say,
the transmission might have been abused,
    didn't you buy used?
and many people wait and wait before fixing their transmission, exacerbating the problem...

    i am no car expert..
but auto transmission is fairly reliable...

i notice people like to make complete generalization about cars based on the handful they own.... (and most knows squat about cars...)
i trust car mechanics, they see problems everyday...
i just don't trust them when they are charging me for repairs...
