My nalgene bottle smells

Like old dish water. I found it in the back of the kitchen at work and decided to make it my own. However, after multiple cleanings with dish soap and very hot water, it still smells icky. Any idea how to remove the smell? My next step is using comet, which already managed to make my yellow bushings green when trying to clean gunk off of those

I was going to suggest a soak for an hour or so in diluted bleach, but I just recalled that Comet is partly bleach, no?

Besides bleach, I think you can hunt down any other disinfectant used for sanitizing food utensils and stuff.

i'm not sure how to clean it as i use either metal siggs or glass sobe bottles for the non-plastic taste, but make sure you don't use anything too harsh on it. It releases the plastic into the water... not very good for you

Unless you're talking about the possible cancer risk of drinking out of any plastic container for a long time (years - plastic gradually deteriorates into the water), then no, nalgene bottles no longer cause cancer. The new ones have stickers saying no BPA, which was the suspected hazardous substance in them.

yea everything causes cancer nowadays. i hate when people use that as a reason to say you're stupid for not doing something that causes cancer though... i mean you might as well avoid it for your health.

To avoid hijacking... i just looked at my shelf and saw a bottle of seventh generation dish soap - you might try something natural like that to get rid of the smell without causing too much damage to the bottle. Maybe let it soak for a day with natural soap and water, then another day with just water to get rid of any soap odor/taste.

The same study that caused nalgene to get rid of BPA also concluded that using any strong chemical on any plastic container increases the amount of plastic in the water. And cancer wouldn't affect the studies on rats given their short lifespan.

To OP;
i found a page with instructions from the company when I was making sure i was accurate in my above statements and they say to try soaking in warm soapy water, warm soapy water with lemon, warm soapy water with baking soda, rolling up a charcoal briquette in newspaper and soaking it for a few days, washing in dishwasher away from the heating element, and adding bleach()

The editor of the site i was on said avoid using the dishwasher, or bleach. but i think the lemon and the charcoal sound pretty good. charcoal is what water filters use and i like the taste of water from those.

i've had some serious issues with stinky nalgene bottles before. the narrow-mouth ones are a bia to clean if you don't do it right away!!

if you use charcoal, make sure you don't use the matchlight kind, because there's added chemicals (lighter fluid basically) in them already.

i've tried the soaking in dish soap/water method for mine, but it didn't work so well. upper rack of the dishwasher (remove the cap as it is more likely to melt) worked best for me

My friend had a nug in his nalgene like 3 months ago. He's washed it 3 times, and left it outside for about a week. It still smells so strongly. Sometimes they just hold the smell

Ive had a couple and they all smell too!!!! I used to wash mine out with soap and water and soak it for a couple hours AND then id let it completely dry out with the cap off for a couple days.

A 5 percent solution of plain, white vinegar kills 99 percent of bacteria. Let it soak overnight, rinse, air dry and the bottles should have no odor.

i had tea in one of mine before... couldnt' get the smell out.
although mine is a camelback i put boiling water in it and let it sit and did that a few times then it worked after a final soap.

Soak it for a while with lemon juice & hot water.
Works like a charm.
