Laws in South Australia
Does anyone happen to know the laws in South Australia for skating on the road? Ive had a bit of a search on the net that says you can skate on roads with no centreline and you gotta wear a helmet but it was on a skating safety brochure..
I only ask because i've skated the streets late at night a bunch with no problems, (quiet suburban streets), but in the past week ive been stopped twice by cops, the first time they just drove past and yelled out the window at me to get off the road but didnt stop. The second time i was coming out of an alley with my friend who was walking, i was barely moving then i picked up by board to cross a main road and a cop stopped and yelled at me threatening to give me a $60 fine for no helmet, i just said sorry and walked the other way..
Neither time they were in any state that I could ask them properly what the rules were, they just seemed to be out to get me but if anyone knows the actual laws or has any experience that would be helpful.. I skate mostly footpaths to uni, but like to use the roads at night to get some speed up and have a carve, but this seems to be the problem..

Re: Laws in South Australia
I don't know the exact law. But I do know it is legal to skate on a road without a yellow line. My understanding is it is illegal to be on a road with a yellow center line.
Don't know about the helmet.
Have you asked on asra's site?

Re: Laws in South Australia
In south australia, police can and will shoot skaters on sight if they are on the road.
in all seriousness you should probably check out ASRA, as i think there are numerous forums about road rules in all states

Yeah I dont believe a helmet is needed for skating. I wear one because people have more respect for you on the road in a helmet.
Yes you can ride on any road that doesnt have lines marked. Thats like suburban roads. Speed limit of 60kmh.
The South Aussie cops like to pick on young guys too.
Dont eat lead paint.

Re: Laws in South Australia
i ride to and from work, on the road and often during peak our traffic and i never get stopped by cops. why? because i wear a helmet and i ride my board in the same manner a cyclist would ride his bike to work. stick as far to the left as possible, slow down at give ways and roundabouts, signal etc etc. its all about common sense and making yourself look safe and legit. i can't count the number of times i've seen a cop just drive on past me. some have even nodded after i've acknowledged them. if you treat the whole situation with a bit of respect, you'll have no problems.
also best if you stay away from the main roads for obvious reasons.
where in adelaide you at by the way cameron?
check the adelaide thread in the aussie longboarding forum - McAdelaide - ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association
