hey guys, i just got back from spending six days in hong kong... and can i say just how flippin' lucky we are to live here! sure, we may not have quite as many streets to skate as we would sometimes like, but boy oh boy, i didn't see anywhere that you could even consider skating over there. i don't even know if it's legal to be honest. and yeah, new zealand rocks. i'm just glad to be home... with my boards!
good to have you back . Its a mad place the Kong Ive been there a few times, I recon if you got out early enough on a weekend day there would be a chance to bomb it and not get run over, the taxi drivers are mad there,, and you would diffinately be pulled up by the cops, so what where you doing there, did you go to the soho bars,
I'm planning on building a new board, the basic toothless method way and was wondering if any of you guys had built a board this way and if so if you had any pointers.
Also any know where to buy some birch ply, i searched in Google and couldn't find much.
Where in the country are you? There are a few wood merchants around who specialise in marine and specialty plys. I haven't seen birch, but have seen maple. Find a local boat builder and ask them.

I'm up in Auckland. What wood can i use, most people on the fish are using birch, are there any other types that will work.

Definately try boat builders. I've found a good one in Hamilton who is very helpful. Marine ply is pretty expensive, but when you do the sums on a per board basis it works out OK.
I've used meranti, hoop pine, fijian kauri and gaboon. Meranti is good (but tends to splinter easily if you're not careful) and it comes in a range of colours from quite red to a lighter honey colour.
Hoop pine, fijian kauri and gaboon are a lot lighter.
I have seen some birch but it looked pretty tatty.

I use clamps and a press system , but if you are doing toothless the most important thing is to start screwing from the nose down the deck in zig zag paton so all the air is evenly pressed out, you dont want any bubles between the laminates, and really let the epoxy cure give it 2 days before you start to to take all the screws out.

Cool, ill let you know what i find out.
The bad thing is about making new boards is that im goin to blow all my money on trucks and wheels, guess i better start saving.
So i went for a skate today, my first in about a week i have been really busy with uni assignments.
Anyway it was pretty fun it have just finished raining so it was pretty greasy, think i spent more time on the ground than i did skating. I busted out some mean stand up slides, i finally got the stale fish speed check down but i think it may be a little harder in the dry
I got a bit of road rash but its all good.
Anyone else be for a skate, i hope summer comes soon im sick of the wet and the cold.
Guys I just got my concrete wave mag today ....so that smy afternoon sorted,
antway have you seen the new board from "carver"it has a full moko design as the graffics man there is going to be some stick about that.
