On something entirely different, what does everyone think about the arrests made earlier today in relation to terrorist allegations made by police? Tame Iti (a well known Maori activist) has been charged under the firearms act along with 14 other people. The police are claiming that the've found 'paramilitary training camps' in the Urewera's. It's hard to tell whether these are training camps or not as the only footage shown on tonights news was a birds eye view of a dirt track (basically).
The Police Commisioner is staying very tight lipped about the whole thing, and has only really said that he feels that the police action was in proportion to the percieved threat. To me, this seems ridiculous. The operation has been going since 2006, and has apparently cost a lot of taxpayer money. Perhaps the police commissioner is simply feeling the pressure to maintain (or arguably regain) some public confidence in the New Zealand police force which has really taken a hit recently.
The people arrested come from very diverse activist backgrounds - the Maori Tino Rangatiratanga group, the peace network and envrironmental groups, however the people have nothing at all in common except an expressed desire to attend a new years eve 'freedom fighter event'.
To me, I see something underlying these arrests. This is very heavy handed police action, especially as they are threatening laying charges under the 2002 Terrorism (supression) act, which will require the Attorney Generals consent.
As David Small said on Closeup tonight - don't forget what has happened overseas in recent times, where governments have used what are essentially 'scare tactics', promoting a culture of fear amongst the general citizenry that can be used to pass what would otherwise be very unpopular legislation. With this in mind, it's worth noting that before parliament at the moment is the Terrorism Suppression Amendment bill, which make the existing law wider and more encompassing.
Any heavy handed police tactics need to be viewed with a large degree of caution - as skaters I'm sure we've all had a run in with the law at one stage or another and this really highlights the need to keep informed. Without knowing what's happening, how can anyone ever protest against potentially repressive or bad law?
Keep an eye out for developments and get involved!
