Hey everyone - here's another - also Auckland (North Shore). Consider myself a newbie at age 40, not quite confident enough on the board for sessions "in public", but keen to chat for advice, etc. Used to skate in late teens and early 20's, but that's a whole generation ago! Was never into tricks etc. (they hadn't invented the modern street-board back then!). I like to cruise and carve - thinking I might try those new developments in Albany area. Don't have skills (or balls) enough for high speed, as I'm not agile enough for slides. Struggling to learn non-mongo pushing. Foot-braking is the first skill I'm trying to master. Thanks for starting the thread! TTFN...
sweet another 1!! welcome mickuel....
yea were spoilt for choice here in albany, so many nice asphalt hills everywhere.
what sort of board do you ride?

Mine was purchased for me by my wife and kids, who asked the nice people at Cheapskates in Takapuna what they'd recommend for someone like me... that is: chubby, stiff-jointed, unco and un-athletic! (I'm sure they weren't as polite as that). My board, which I love, is a very pretty thing from OP. I don't know if the model has a name, but it's a 42" pintail shape with Revenge trucks and Kryptonics clear blue Route 65s. I have not seen a lot mentioned about the OP brand on this site... I hope that doesn't mean it's a bad board. I think it's about $360-worth, so that doesn't feel very "entry-level" price-wise. I love it, so far. I'm amazed by how easily it turns and carves - so much more stable than my old school 80s board (an Edwards I got for my 21st birthday).

What about your board? I guess being young and fit you are more into the serious downhill stuff?
haha 'younger' sure.... but fit? got some work to do on that....
your pin sounds like a solid little setup... sweet cruiser..
as for me id like to get hold of a downhill board actually but im mostly into the carving cruising style, im currently running a sector9 cloud series. amazing flex in it love it, i also have a 46" pintail awaiting some nice trucks... the old student budget is kinda limiting and as my skating comes second to the waves i tend to spend it all on boards and petrol!
Ha thats funny Monk ....your welcome on my streets anyway as long as you are mongo
Anyway good to see that there are some NZ longboarder out there but yes we are spread thin Im in Nelson and Ive only ever seen 2 others with long boards ,I go out early morning .
Its a lonely life when you have the need for speed in this part of the land.
got some good roads here though.
Hey Oscar have you made that bamboo deck yet?

You guys in on the shore are lucky there are so many nice hills, they taunt me on the way to uni everyday, we might have to all get together some time,
Carbon8 i know what you mean i spend most of my money on petrol to find waves. Where to you normal go surfing?
yeah man theres some nice hidden treasures round albany too... plenty up orewas new developments aswell
anyone seen the new luge thing goin in next to snow planet? im thinking a moonlit session before it opens up aye, might have to get my sliding down proper first tho...
yea bro, usual waves are maori bay( nice peak at the mo if you brave the cold) but i prefer north aye, forestry teari waipu. had i nice lil wave at orewa after the storm aye.
If your keen for a cruise jus yell out aye, it gets boring rolling on your own.

Cool my parents have a caravan up at waipu so i mostly surf around there. When was the last time you went out, ive missed just about every swell over the last 3 months so i haven't been out for ages. I decided that when the next swell comes im ditching uni and going to head up north.
That luge track sounds like fun. I did some quick research and read that it was suppose to be open by June so it should be finished soon.
nice, waipu's one of my fav spots aye....
i was out on thurs and saturday... bit chilly aye... you just missed a nice swell again....
hope you got a nice steamer...
k jus decided.... the next night im sober im going to scope out the luge... then will report back....

Nah steamers are for girls. I saw that there was goin to be a bit of a swell and was goin to go but i had to help a mate move but next swell im there.

So these nice slopes you speak of... any of them good for a guy like me to learn on? Right outside my house there's on OK hill if I go in the middle of the night when no cars around, but it's kinda too steep at one end and flattens out real quick in the other direction, so I don't a very long ride before I pike out. I'm just trying to get higher and higher up before I start. What I think want is a really long ride with not too much gradient until I get a good feel for how fast I can go and stay stable. I totally suck at foot-braking so far so I like to just ride it or carve it out.
Maybe I'd be better off to just suck it up - go for a big hill, and gradually reduce the amount I carve until I can end up with a more down-hill thing going on. My Revenge trucks may not be too happy about speed, though - they do like to to turn!

yeah man, im gona suggest the mega center in albany to start off with... the carparks nice and wide to carve off any speed easily and has a nice easy slope to it. you can start right up the top by the courthouse, cruise down past national bank and all the way down to underneath the warehouse, or if your real keen all the way to old albany village...
i might suggest at night tho... it can get abit crazy in the day with traffic, lots of fun weaving in and out of traffic when you get abit more confident
theres other cools spots too,
Apollo drives nice along with the surrounding roads
theres some nice gems on the otherside of the motorway from the megacenter up around pinehill
william pickerings nice and slow
theres a way cool hill behind the courthouse you can see from the motorway... corinthian i think... that ones faaaaast.......
theres heaps more, just jump in the car and drive till your lost.... any new subdivision will have nice roads and theres heaps to be found.
ohh orewa has some coolies too and new subdivisions round red beach and out the whangaparoa peninsula, i know of some in arkles bay, some nice ones out gulf harbour too...
sweet dude
rains gone finally...yay... looking like a lazy sunday cruise might be on the books later this evening.....
Maaaate!
Just came back from my first ever couple of runs at Apollo.... Ohhhh yeeeeah.
Seeing as it's close to home I couldn't resist throwing the board in the car "just in case I had time" on the way back from running an errand.
I normally approach Apollo from the Constellation end (often drive here for the kids' swimming and dancing lessons). Drove up to the Millenium Sports Institute and kicked off from the carpark there. Was able to start slowly, and just cruise and gently carve my way down to the roundabout, with only one minor 'jump-and-run' bail on a stone.
Then took the left, to head back the way I had just driven up, so I'm going back towards Mairangi Bay.
Sweeeet feeling of success to be able to get up a bit more speed than I usually permit myself, and a longer run. There's a bit there that's deceptively quick for a newbie so I did get a bit of a fright at one point when I straightened up for a tad too long and got a bit close for comfort to a speed-wobble (I remember these with great fear and loathing from my youth!). I was concerned my carve was going to slide out from under me, but happily I made it down to a part of the road that levelled out and I was able to just roll to walking pace and hop off.
MAN, did that feel good!
So anyways - I had to do it again - once from half-way up (the steepest bit that had caught me by surprise) and once again from the top. I'll have to get better at reading hills - it looks pretty tame when you're driving it, but you sure notice the incline when trudging back up it on foot.
After a couple other quick little jaunts (one on to a steeper side street that I gave up on near the top - not wide enough for my carves) near the car once I'd walked up I took a cruise in the car around the streets nearby. Apollo itself looks beautiful heading north, and there's a couple of others to challenge myself with.
Thanks heaps for the suggestion of skating there - it's done a lot for my confidence to get on a road and feel the cold air rushing past my face. Hours of fun to be had. I won't be able to stop myself getting back out there soon - even with a pretty f*cked up Achilles tendon in my pushing leg.
So - thanks to your suggestion I now have a new stomping ground... have to try Albany Megacentre next - is that faster than Apollo? Thanks for feeding the stoke, bro!
well done... apollos a nice ride.... the other ways cool too... down towards fish city and rosedale road.
both apollo and the mega center are nice cruisy hills, definitely my regular hills...
theres plenty more around... specially as you (and i actually) get more confident....
spread the stoke!!!
damn i wanna go for another roll now........................
