Re: The Kiwi Thread (and no, not the fruit)
a bigger wheel will not nessesarilly a faster ride make.
big wheels will roll longer and better once up to a good speed though.
depending on the duro you may accually go slower
ie 75a 75mm wheel vs 81a 70mm depending on surface smaller wheel could quite easily beat the larger softer one.
standard reds bearings are pretty good for 35bucks
I like the lemon big zigs for speed and traction .

Re: The Kiwi Thread (and no, not the fruit)
anyone in Nelson ... heads up the wiamea rd / motorway roundo bout is getting sealed tonight and the main drag down to it will be closed off from 6pm ... it has good seal and you can hit 50 if wind is right
I'll be there to check it out from 6.30ish not to sure how the council workers will react.
its good for a carve or cones.

I'm going to speak strictly from a Physics point of view and not experience because I don't have enough. A larger diameter wheel will have the ability to rotate faster because of the increase in diameter (distance around the edge diameter) I ain't going to go back to my books and try to remember it. But a increase in diameter decreases the speed at the axle (bearing) , so less friction and all that jazz. This is a similar concept to Bones 6 ball bearing design rather than the traditional 7 in most bearings, bigger ball bearings less rotations more speed less friction blah blah blah, then you can get into momentum and torque inertia etc too big can be worse and take too long to speed up called rotational inertia (I had to google that couldn't remember what it was called)
This is not taking into account duro, stickier wheels = more friction = less speed.
(I am agreeing with you Kookyfish) lols, I think for me I have to calculate everything and weigh up the pros and cons, some things you can calculate some things are down to experience like what duro or formula works best on which surface.
Isn't it rude that I bring education into to a fun thing like skating lols, summary nguurrrrrrrr, be cool like Kookyfish and just skate and learn from experience and preference, be a no fun geek like me and calculate things and still find your not happy cause some things just need to be experienced.

Re: The Kiwi Thread (and no, not the fruit)
applied for my nz visa two weeks ago, so fingers crossed will be living in christchruch from feb to june next year. many people riding around there? also, anyone selling a longboard or freebord in nz, i reckon it'll be more cost effective to get one over there rather than taking one of mine, also gives me an excuse to get another deck!

Any suggestions for streets/parks with long steady slopes so I can practice my carving and stuff?
Hopefully I'll see some of you guys around when my skills are up and I'm not shamed out by my own clumsiness

Re: The Kiwi Thread (and no, not the fruit)
I didn't think I'd be able to take it on the plane, but emailed the airline to check. Was told I was allowed an extra 10kg for my surfboard (I did specify longboard skateboard...) so long as its under 7ft.
Thought I'd get a new one anyway and bought a Rayne factory second, checked shipping and it was $20 to the UK of NZ, or so it said when I changed countries and checked shipping costs. Bought it on a bank holiday (they were going up irregularily, when they'd sold out tehy were gone for good, so thought I'd better make sure I had one). Anyways, called them up to see if they could prolong shipping until I know my address, only to be told I need to pay them another £30 for shipping as the one on the site is for North America only, which it doesn't say on the site. Waiting for an email from them to see if they'll ship it to the UK, and how much extra it'll be. I said I think they should pay the shipping as its not my fault, its theirs and I wasted a load of time checking their site throughout the day. I doubt it though, which is rather annoying.
Guess I'll be bringing one of mine if it doesn't work out and hope the airline doesnt charge me an arm and a leg...

Re: The Kiwi Thread (and no, not the fruit)
I take boards on plains all the time ,.in fact Im taking 2 on thursday to Oz .
if your total weight is over 20kgs they will charge extra . I put them through no problem and carry a bag on for free.
I think you will be paying $100 for your board to be shipped out here,
but to the UK from CAN it shouldnt be to much .. just depends on what mail system the 2 countries have in comon.
Id say just bring one with you.

Have a look and ask around at neednotollie.com. I know there's a lot of longboarders from wellington on there.
