    Angry Rattling Dervish...?

I have recently bought two dervish setups - one for me, one for my son.
Mine: Flex 1, Gullwing 10" Chargers, Orangatang In Heats 80a; Bones Swiss Ceramics.
His: Flex 2; Paris 180s; Orangatang In-Heats; Airflow.
His is smooth & sweet - when you lower the board to the ground to start cruising, the board "sounds" tight and smooth. Mine kinda rattles like something is loose and chatters when I'm pushing off, until speed is reached. It rolls fine; but something isn't right, 'cause I know the other setup is fine.
Checked all the usual suspects - wheels (axle nuts are snug with a tiny amount of "play"); kingpins are also snug (no play at all); truck mountings are tight - i.e. there are no obvious signs of looseness in any of the components. It's frustrating the hell out of me....! Anyone out there with any ideas?

I`m guessing the top bushing washer is making that sound, mine was like that too.
Tighten the kingpin just a little and it probably disappears.

I did tighten the kingpin nut as much as I thought it needed for the trucks to still turn well - but I'll have a look again now and let you know how I get on.

if it is the top bushing washer then the rattling should go away when your turning.
If it is then you can ignore it. if its too annoying you can get nylon? washers from MHS

I tightened the kingpin nut; but it made no difference (except now the truck is too tight and the bushing started squeaking - so I loosened it again).
The "rattling" goes away when being ridden, and it really is super-smooth when being used. It's only when placing the board on the ground without stepping on it, it sounds and feels SO different from my other setup (the one with the Paris trucks) - it feels like someting is loose. You can also feel the rattling when pushing off (when my weight comes off the board (under-weighting?); but then again, this gets less when I gather speed). Maybe I shouldn't complain - as I said, when I'm on it and moving, even in a straight line, it's fine.
I've read lots of comments regarding changing the stock bushing washers to flat (or nylon as you've suggested). What does this change do for the setup?

Both my boards do that, It's because you've got play in the wheels.

yea it it because you dont have the nut for the wheels completely tightened. do you have bearing spacers? because if you do, you can tighten the nut down until it is snug, and the wheel will still roll well.

I actually did tighten the axle nuts pretty firmly until there's no play whatsoever in the wheels - in fact they spin a little less further now (maybe they're too tight now?). And whatdya know - same "hollow" sound. So I don't think that it's the play in the wheels; but it could be the bearing spacers rattling around...? but there's no rattle if I shake the board.....and if the axle nuts are tight, then the spacers couldn't move around, could they...?
Actually, that's a good description of the sound - a "hollow" sound.
Maybe I'll try to take the wheels apart and take out the bearing spacers to see if the sound changes - didn't really want to prise out of the wheel my new Bones Swiss Ceramic bearings (well, until I had to give them their first clean that is).
It's just so strange that there a marked difference between this and my other (almost identical) setup - Paris trucks and Airflow bearings.

Default Bones spacers - In Heat Otang combo?

I think this may be the spacers that come with Bones bearings when used with Otang In Heats...I've had exactly the same experience after swapping out my old bearings and spacers for a new bones setup. The wheels spin beautifully but when the board goes down on the road there's a really horrible rattling sound that stays at low speed and whilst turning. This is while the axle nuts are tightened down hard. I know its nothing to do with the kingpin washers because there was no rattle 10minutes earlier with the old bearings and spacers in place. I wonder if the bones spacers are just a fraction too short for the centre core of the wheels?

I'm going to try replacing the bones spacers with my old set to see if it cures the problem.

PS - I know this is an old post but the rattle really gets on my nerves...plus no-one can have a go about searching before posting...

Do you also have chargers as well? It is probably the pivot cup. My friend's board with chargers also rattled and this was because the pivot of the charger had a bit of extra material that was destroying the pivot cup. Replacing the pivot cup and sanding down the pivot of the hanger so that it's perfectly round should solve the rattling problem

I've got randals not chargers...I suspected the spacers because I changed the bearings and spacers and the board instantly went from silent to rattly...I'll check though to make sure though...

I have nearly the same set-up as you apart from I have 4president wheels, I also had the same annoying rattling noise, after a lot of messing about I found that where the hanger sits in the cup, I packed in some kitchen roll but you could use anything soft I suppose. I then wedged hanger back in the cup and NO MORE RATTLING Try it out it worked for me.

With Otangs I dont thin you need bearings spacers since the cores are shaped in such a way that the bearings will remain at the correct spacing in the core, so you could probably do away with the bearing spacers entirely.

Try spinning your wheels slowly by hand to see if they still rattle. If so then you should check the ball bearings themselves. And you should tighten your wheel nuts to the point where there is no wheel play, and then back off just a tad.

Incorrect, Orangatangs needs spacers like any other wheel.

oh my, then i retract my statement.

I only posted so because I have inheats on my dervish, run bearings with no spacers, and I haven't encountered any problems.
